CALFILE Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 hi, i have a question regarding file security over the networking. when user prompt the open remote dialog box , file name shows on the dialog box and can user copy that file from the dialog box ? the file resides on a remote computer which user has no access to - only available through open remote dialog box. kevin
Wim Decorte Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 are you asking if the user can copy the file name or the file itself? There is no way the user can copy the actual file from that "open remote" dialog, it does not point to any actual files. It's just a list of files that FMS returns as available to connect to.
CALFILE Posted September 10, 2014 Author Posted September 10, 2014 Hi, Wim. So if the file resides on a remote computer that user has no access to it , there is no way - whichever way it might be - user can copy the actual file ? Thanks, Kevin
Wim Decorte Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 That's right. Not if you did the deployment properly. If you have enabled a network share (in the OS) to the folder where the FM files then you may be at risk obviously. But FMS does not require that kind of share. And also obviously, the physical security of the server machine has to be taken care of. If someone can walk up to it and insert a thumb drive and copy the files... (also think about where you keep the backups)
Steven H. Blackwell Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Do take note however that you must also take steps to prevent a user from extracting the contents of the file in a manner that you did not intend to happen. What is more valuable: the file or the contents of the file? File Access Protection and carefully defined Privilege Set options are essential for protecting the contents of the file. See this White Paper: http://www.fmpug.com/resources/security_schema_changes_filemaker_11 that contains information that is still relevant in FileMaker® Pro 13. Steven
