jonben Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 We have a sister company that is able to access one of our databases via the Internet. We are not using the Filemaker web hosting option. Rather, we are allowing in their IP address and sharing the database via IP. My questions goes to speed of access. Is there anything we can do on either side to increase the speed with which our sister company accesses the database. I have suggested increasing the bandwidth, but would like to hear any ideas anyone else has. Thanks for your help.
ibiubu Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 In the use of my database, believe it or not I have found that when I access it using Web Companion it runs CONSIDERABLY faster than when I access it remotely using FileMaker. The difference is so noticable that when I try accessing it thru FileMaker after I have done so through Web Companion, it is almost unbearable. LR
Keith M. Davie Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 When you set up File Sharing there is a message in the set-up window which cautions that things will likely slow down. Thus I don't think you shouuld be surprised that they did. Options for improved operation seem limited to Timbuktu for file sharing or web publishing.
ibiubu Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 Timbuktu is a good suggestion. Use it. I have used it to get onto the machine running the database. One limitation is that only one person can get on at a time per each machine. I have also used Apple Desktop Remote (same limitation applies), and it is slower than Timbuktu. LR
jonben Posted April 26, 2002 Author Posted April 26, 2002 Thanks for your input. I didn't mention that we are connecting a DSL office to a 256K Frac T1 at our end. Could the answer be as simple as upping the 256K to a full T1? What speeds have you used? Thanks.
ibiubu Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 That would help. But here I have DSL at both ends running at about 800k. Web Companion still runs A LOT faster than FileMaker over the internet. LR
