nightdesigns Posted May 2, 2002 Posted May 2, 2002 We're really increasing what we do with FM and how much useage it'll get. Right now it's on my old PII266 which is just a butchered together computer. So far it's done great, but here's what's next. Primary DB, ~10,000 records 86 fields apiece (ya i know) Currently with 7,000 records it's at 13mb. About a dozen child DB's each under 3mb 10,000 more records there. These databases will be growing fast, but not too much in them. 5 client computers doing simple text input. 1 automation which will be running a script every few mintues. Script run times take from a few seconds, to several mintues (find for records). Those will be run in off peak hours. I'll probably also be doing a little bit of file storing on the same computer, cd burner, and tape backup. So how much power will i need. I have a place that will build a computer to spec with the parts i choose. I was also toying with the idea of dual processor. Price is a factor. Here's what i was looking at so far, feel free to add/remove/suggest whatever you want. It's only on scratch paper right now. Tyan Thunder S2460 Dual Motherboard AMD 1600+ MP Palomino MB (x2) 512mb /266mhz DDR ram IBM Deskstar 60GB Ultra 100 7200 2mb nVidia TNT2 M64 AGP Video Card I do not know much about AMD processors. I've worked with some and have been very happy with them. I don't need top of the line, but i don't want the celeron processor of the AMD world. Thanks -j
Anatoli Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 IBM are the worst overheated drivers now. After several blow up after 3-6 months with the famous click of death I've installed fans for the rest we have. We never had problems with Seagate and WD. Also read IBM recommendation: no more than 11 or 13 hours of work. We have in past also many issues with AMD and VIA so we are back to Intel camp.
nightdesigns Posted May 3, 2002 Author Posted May 3, 2002 Thanks for the reply. I find that interesting about the IBM drives. I do video editing and have a stack of them and i've had no problems. They're also the quietest ones i've ever used. Thanks -j
Anatoli Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 How old they are? I am talking about IBM not even year old. They where quite quiet, but not as new Seagate
nightdesigns Posted May 4, 2002 Author Posted May 4, 2002 I have IBM desktar 6gb 4years old current file server. 10gb 3 years old 20 gb 2 years old used to Video 60 gb 8 months old a/v tuned, used for video. The 20 started to fail 2 months into ownership, and was replaced within a week (even sent me the new one before i sent my old one back). Other than that, no problems.
