Checkbox values recorded in another table

Featured Replies

Greetings, all:

(With three topics posted in under two weeks, you know how my month is going. :S ) I apologize if this topic has been covered elsewhere in this forum--I looked but just couldn't find an answer.

I have a text field with a value list of school grade levels (K, 1, 2, 3 ... 11, 12) that's in a checkbox form on a layout; teachers often tick more than one grade in that value list per record. Fine.

However, parsing this field set-up is a pain when it comes to producing summary reports (though there is a "Magic Key" way of doing it--see http://filemakerhacks.com/2011/07/31/magic-key-and-check-box-reporting/) . Magic Key looks interesting but from what's been suggested here in the forums, it's best practice to create a separate record for each recorded value (in another table), making it far easier to create summary reports.

So, how do I pull this off: While keeping the format of a checkbox field, how can I create related records that add or subtract in another table per users' "pickings" in a checkbox'd field? (The reason the format is important is because the tech that composes the Lasso web pages for our FMP web server doesn't know how to code it for handling portals.)
