form validation

I've been working on this a couple of days now, with some success. But I've reached a sticking point. I'm trying to do basic javascript form validation. The application I'm working on is an existing database that includes field names with spaces (i.e. First Name, Last name...). I need to validate these fields as well as related fields. My validation attempts get stuck at the spaces and the ::. Does anyone have any solutions to these problems?
