putting on the web

Featured Replies

Hello, please could someone give me some advise on how to put my database on the web so other people out of the company can view it.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Chris.

hi,

do you want to allow access into your database over the web (major potential scurity issues) or to use a browser interface?

If you're intending to share the database, then a firewall with a VPN system is the safe setup. You'd need to be really sure of your password protection if you were to simply share it over the Internet.

For a browser interface you will need:

A computer connected to a permanent line with a fixed 'legal' ip address and preferably a registered domain name. Some posters here have suggested ways that you can use a computer with a dynamic address.

Once your computer can be seen from the Internet, publishing is easy if you simply activate Instant web publishing. You'll need to make sure that the structure of your database - layouts, scripts etc. will allow you to get the functionality you need over the web.

If you can learn a little CDML and make your own pages then you can do much more advanced dynamic web stuff but there's a learning curve both for building the pages and also in learning the best way to make the database for the web.

if you go the browser route then you'll need a copy of FMP unlimited unless you can live with the 12 addresses in 24 hours limit of the regular copy.

This is a big subject so if you can post some more details of what you want to do, maybe we can help more.

regards,

jeff
