Communicating Dates and Deadlines

When Will This Be Done? We are always asked, “When will this be done?”. Sometimes by customers, sometimes by teammates. It can be tough to answer when we’re not sure if we can meet our delivery dates and deadlines. Remember, everyone involved has the same goals – to understand the current situation and make plans to the best of our ability. The complexity of our work can make planning unpredictable, and that’s frustrating for everyone. But remembering that we all […] The post Communicating Date

Transactions in FileMaker 19.6: Part 1

What Are Transactions? We each conduct transactions every day. We transact when we talk with other people, when we buy goods from a store, and when we check out a book from the library. In the database world, transactions have a similar meaning – exchanging this for that, whether it be ideas, encouragement, or money. Transactions are also a database concept for maintaining data integrity. When working with databases, there are times when you want to make several changes to […] The post Transact

The Pause that Refreshes by Marcia Conner

“My home office has a full refrigerator, no commute, and a loving dog, yet this place has all of you.” — Pause 2022 attendee A few weeks ago, I spent time in the North Georgia mountains with over a hundred daring developers and intrepid techies at the tenth annual PauseOnError conference. Brave because the event takes place outdoors in mid-October at a high enough elevation for nights to grow cold and rainy days, some years, to soak clothes through and […] The post <strong>The Pause that

The Impact of Microsoft Deprecating Direct SMTP Access

What is Happening? In September 2019, Microsoft announced plans to follow suit with Google and deprecate direct SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) access to their services, meaning that unsecured methods, such as sending emails with FileMaker’s ‘Send Mail’ function, would become obsolete. Essentially, users are longer able to log in using only their username and password, as it is not considered a safe method of authentication. As of October 1st, 2022, this plan has been put into action and us

Claris Snippets

I love finding new and clever ways to make my computers work better for me. One of the most transformational productivity tools that I use on a daily basis is a clipboard manager, which saves every bit of text that I copy on my clipboard so that, when I go to paste, I don’t have to be limited by only the most recent item saved to my clipboard. The next evolution of this idea is snippets—things that I may want […] The post Claris Snippets appeared first on Proof+Geist (formerly Geist Interactive

Modern FileMaker – Server at the Center

Last week, Claris released FileMaker 19.5. Although there were features for FileMaker Pro and Go, Claris FileMaker Server got the lion’s share of the updates. We aren’t surprised by their focus, as the center of innovation and automation has shifted from the FileMaker file to the FileMaker server over the last few years. The Modern FileMaker Revolution is centered on the server. Tired: Centered on the user and the file For most of its history, FileMaker users and developers focused […] The post

Building a modular picker with an OnTimer Script

It’s common in Claris FileMaker to create picker windows. Imagine selecting a customer for many different parts of your app: Invoices, Work Orders, Sales Orders. How can you reuse the same customer picker and have the result from the picker target different tables? One technique that we use here at Proof+Geist is to use the Install OnTimer script step along with a handler script.  The components are: Calling script, with context-dependency Handler script, with context-dependency Picker window Pi

Managing authentication for FileMaker-backed web apps

One of the wonderful things about Claris FileMaker is its ability to power web apps. However, doing so brings up questions about authentication. For instance, how do you allow a user to securely log into a web app? Once they’ve logged in, how can information about the user be easily collected, displayed, and changed according to the user’s role and permission set in that web app? For Next.js there is a great library to handle secure authentication: NextAuth. Because NextAuth […] The post Managi
