Where are the attached files kept?
Kayos replied to Kayos's topic in Calculation Engine (Define Fields)
Thanks - but how is it stored? Just as code or an actual document somewhere that I'm just not seeing? -
Hey folks I can't seem to find an answer for this question so perhaps a: it is very obvious, b: I'm searching for the wrong terms, or c: nobody really cares as long as it works : I have a container field in a runtime DB where people can attach resumes in PDF format. But where are these attachments located after they are attached? Does Filemaker just assimilate them into the database somehow or does the file get put into an invisible folder somewhere? Thanks

If that was indeed a bug in v.7 then it was a pretty specific one to turn a button into a tab so cleanly. I can't believe that Filemaker wasn't aware of this capability. It would seem a pretty handy bug to keep since it was so easy to do and looked much nicer than buttons. Are you saying that it was a bug in v.7 because it turned into a tab? In v.8 it works in one view but not another so they have yet to fix the bug? If Wikipedia's definition would apply here it would either be a bug in v.7 or v.8 - I draw a button in v.7 and it turns into a tab which, if I wanted a button, would produce the incorrect result. If I wanted a tab in v.8 and draw a button as I did in v.7 and got only a button in the Form view but not in the List view then I'm getting an incorrect result in one view or the other.

Thanks for your help Ender and comment. It still seems to be a bug to me since it works in one view but not another. I still can't seem to get any reply from Filemaker so I will just move forward with another solution.

Hey comment Yes, the top part is the header and the bottom the body. That's disappointing that this does not work in v.8 and gives you no alternative. The new Tabs function does not allow you to navigate between Layouts. While typing this I took note of your comment "at least not in the forms view" and can confirm that it does in fact work as it should while in the List view. Seems like a bug to me but Filemaker has yet to get back to my inquiries on it.

Hey Ender I've tried to adjust the layering and the fill for those objects but nothing seems to help. Just to be sure, I went back to Filemaker Pro 7 and created a new database to see if I did anything special to make them work correctly but I didn't. Once you create the button over the top of the body and switch from layout to browse or find mode it automatically makes the button a tab for you. I did the same for Filemaker Advanced 8 but it does not turn them into a tab. Do you have access to Filemaker Pro 7 anywhere? Are you able to create the same tabs from buttons in 8? Maybe there's a setting I'm missing in 8? perhaps the issue is related to me having both v.7 and v.8 on the same system?

Here are some screenshots that illustrate my problems. The first shot is how the tabs looked in the FM7 browse mode and the second is the same database in FM8 browse mode. You will notice how the tabs look, well, like tabs in FM7 and like buttons in FM 8. Of course, I wouldn't rule out the fact that I'm being a complete moron and ignoring the obvious but any help would be appreciated. Thanks FM7Tabs.pdf FM8Tabs.pdf

Hello I was quite dismayed when opening my Filemaker 7 database in Filemaker 8 Advanced to find that my navigation tabs created in 7 no longer show up as tabs but buttons. I know there is a lot of talk about the new tabbed feature in v.8 but as I understand it, you cannot use them to navigate to different layouts. Is there a way to import the old tab feature in 8? or make the the new tab feature work as it did in the old v.7 way? I can't believe Filemaker would disable something like this but did they? I have some screenshots if nyone needs to see what I'm talking about... Thanks for the help

Thanks transpower, that worked out for a single piece of software but I failed to mention in my earlier post that I would be assigning multiple pieces of software to one user. How do I allow for multiple pieces in a list format? Also, could I make this backward compatible as well? If I enter the Software ID in the portal in the Users record, could it fill in the assigned field on the software record?

I have a User database and a Software database. The User database has a specific ID for each user and a field for Software assets assigned to that user. The Software database has a specific ID for the software and a field for the user it is a ssigned to. In the Software database I want to be able to assign Adobe Photoshop to Jim Smith and have that record automatically populate the Software Assets field in the Jim Smiths record with the Software ID#. Can someone help get me started? I could probably figure it out if someone can point me in the right direction... Thanks!

Ender Thanks for your input, that was exactly what I was trying to do it. I thought it could be done but didn't really didn't know what to look for. Off to build a database...

After I figure out Filemaker, maybe I'll move on to Perl... But back to my original question(which I'm guessing is no): Is there anyway to join these databases together within Filemaker Pro 7?

I've got two seperate database files - a User database with each user and various info as individual records and a Software database with all of our software licenses. Each user has a unique login name - Joe Smith would be jsmith - and in the User database record is a field for the software they are currently assigned called "SW Assigned". In my Software database, the records all have a unique ID number and have a field "Assigned to:" which is filled with a login name of the user that is assigned the software(ie., "jsmith".) I'm trying to create a relationship that automatically fills the "SW Assigned" field in the User database when I enter the users login name to the "Assigned to:" field from the Software database. How can I do this(assuming that i can) and can it be done the other way around - if I enter the unique ID number of the software in the User record, have it autofill the software's "Assigned to:" field? Thanks!

There's a version 2.35 on their site... http://www.dotcomsolutionsinc.net/downloads/demo_software/index.html

I downloadsed the demo of FMPro Migrataor and tried it but got the most obtuse and confusing output that I could do little with. it was easier to keep three seperate databases. I'm on a Mac and haven't seen a lot of positive feedback out there about it on the Mac side. So is there no way to do it in Filemaker itself?

Hey folks Can I combine existing seperate database files into one master database? I have to get together an asset management system and I wanted to be able to give the Users, Hardware Assets, and Software Assets unique databases. I tried making a master list that contained all the fields I wanted for the three databases and then created three layouts accordingly. The problem was that I would create a record for a piece of hardware in the Hardware layout and then create a record for a user in the User layout but the two layouts don't share the same fields and when I went to enter a new user record I would mistakenly be adding the information to what seemed to be an empty record but was instead a hardware asset that wasn't showing any fields in the User layout...(phew! I'm just tired from re-reading that!) So I ended up just creating three seperate database files - Software Assets, Hardware Assets, and Users - so now I have three windows open at a time when entering data which can be difficult to manage. I was wondering if there was a way to combine the three seperate files into one master list? Perhaps I should go back to the original master database and I was just not building it correctly? Thanks for any help...

Thanks Vaughn, that did it!

OK, so maybe I'm asking too much of Filemaker here but is it possible to have two text fields auto-fill a third field? I've got a database for the user community that I support and there user-name/authenticator is always going to be their first initial and their last name (i.e, David Jones - "djones".) Ao I have a last-name field, a first-name field, and a user-name field - is it possible to create a script or calculation to autofill the user-name field with just the first letter from the first name-field and the contents of the last-name field to auto-fill the user-name field? Thanks for any help...
