  1. Hi all, We're running an FM Server 5.5 under Windows 2000. I understand that keeping "windows file sharing" turned off is a big time requirement. Coming from a UNIX background, I would like to install cygwin so that I can run an sshd server on the Windows 2000 box so I can make backups from a UNIX-based backup server [currently the FM Server is making local backups to a separate directory on the same PC via the FM backup function]. I would like to know if installing sshd is considered 'safe' since to FileMaker Server. I assume so, but I wanted to check with the wizards here first. Thanks, /vjl/
  2. Just FYI, but this it not correct. MySQL is 100% free for commercial use. In June/July 2000 MySQL was released under the GPL; before that it was released under a 'Free Public License' that prohibited commercial use without a paid license. So any version older than 3.23.x *does* cost money, but consdering that MySQL AB does not support 3.22 and below, it seems less likely that one would want to use that now. You can read the license agreement here: http://www.mysql.com/company/legal/licensing/opensource-license.html /vjl/
  3. Do you think a Mac mini with a couple of Firewire external drives would perform as fast as a SATA or SCSI solution? We're going to put together a FMP 7 server soon and I'd like it to be on a Mac [we currently run FMP server 5.5 under win2k]. The Mac mini's size and relative power make it an attractive option, though I know the laptop HD is not up to speed [heh], but it would only be used for rsync backup jobs - the primary FMP files would live on the FW drives. We currently support 20 concurrent users, and no web users. Thanks for any info you can provide! /vjl/
  4. Check OpenLink's MySQL driver: http://uda.openlinksw.com/odbc/st/odbc-mysql-st/. It costs $99 per seat though! I just posted a question here asking if the free MyODBC has been able to be used with FMP6, so perhaps someone can shed some light on that. /vjl/
  5. We are beginning to migrate away from Windows 2000/FMP6 to Mac OS X/FMP6 [FMP7 will be migrated to at some point, but not for a while]. Under Windows, we've got FMP able to update our MySQL db via ODBC and the MySQL AB. free driver, MyODBC. I downloaded MyODBC for OS X on Friday, yet FMP6 would not see the MyODBC datasource [eg: when using the File->Open->ODBC Source]. I tried this with FMP7 as well, and came up with the same results. After doing some research, it appears that the reason for this is because FMP6 [and 7?] is a CFM application, and the MyODBC driver is a Mach O application, as is the OS X ODBC administrator application. I had to download iODBC [a free ODBC administrator program for creating DSNs], and also download a 30-day evaluation of a CFM-based MySQL driver from a company called OpenLink <http://www.openlinksw.com/>. OpenLink charges $99 per seat for their MySQL driver, but it actually does work with FMP6. My question to y'all here is - has anyone successfully used the free MyODBC MySQL ODBC driver with FMP6 running OS X [10.3.8 in this case]? Spending $99 for something that has been free in the Windows world just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I am very much interested in learning if there is a way to use the MyODBC driver with FMP6. Thanks for any info you can provide. /vjl/
