I need some web basics

Featured Replies

I need some help. Currently we are running 5 users on FMserver 5 on an WinXP machine. We have a newhire who will be working from home that I want to give access to. FMserver is running about 25 fm files. How can I publish these files on the web dynamically (so users networked and the one viewing it from the web are seeing the same info)? Neither the office or the users have static IP's

Thanks in advance

Jeff

Have a look at Instant Web Publishing - if you just need something "quick and dirty". Otherwise a copy of "Claris Home Page" (now defunct) could get you going quickly on a "simple" custom published environment. In all circumstances you will need a dedicated machine to run FMP (NOT SERVER) that can "publish" the files to the web. (FM Server cannot "publish")

If the comms service at office and home are reasonable then the "newhire" could use the DBs as everyone else - they just need a copy of FMP. It may be cheaper to get the lines upgraded to achieve a resonable throughput.

For the purpose you describe, it may be that Timbuktu would serve your purposes just as well, if not better than IWP. Although I've not used it, I am aware of a lot of FMPro developers who do for remote connectivity.

The big problems is going to be the dynamic IP address. How is anybody going to know which machine to connect into?

You may need to change ISP's and get a static number.
