Autofill a field using data from another table

Hi

I have a simple database. It has an Invoice and contacts tables. Contacts has a name_full field which combines first and last names. The tables are related using a unique key.

When you create a new invoice and start typing in the name field, I want it to autofill dynamically as you type using data from the name_full field from the contacts table.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

There should not be a Name field in the Invoices table*.

I presume you are trying to populate the ContactID field in the Invoices table, using a value list defined to use values from Contacts::ContactID, also display values from Contacts::name_full, show values only from second field.

Unfortunately, Filemaker does not support auto-complete in a drop-down list with a value list defined in this way (see the notes on this help page: https://help.claris.com/en/pro-help/content/auto-complete.html). However, if you set up the field as a pop-up menu, you will be able to jump to the desired entry by typing the first few letters.

Alternatively, you could select from a card window and use a script trigger to progressively reduce the found set as you type.

(*)  Unless you're worried that the contact's name may change and you need to preserve the name at the time of issuing the invoice. But that doesn't seem very likely.
