September 11, 200223 yr Dear All, I would like to know since we have a filemaker server for 10 seats. The speed is slow down and we don't really know why? ...Is it that we install badly ? or we share the files incorrectly. IS there a trick that we can speed up when open files. We put all the files in filemaker server ( on one machine), and we share all the files on that filemaker server. Is it the correct way to share files? I am really in need of this question. Thanks
September 11, 200223 yr When you say "share" do you mean that you open the files via a shared drive, or do you open the files via Filemaker's File-Open-Hosts dialog? File sharing should NEVER be enabled on a database server, nor should any other software be running. What OS is on that machine? What version of Filemaker Server are you running? Filemaker Inc has many Best Practices whitepapers on thier website, and those should be followed.
September 11, 200223 yr Author Yeah I mean "share" by share drive ...is it supposed onfile-open-host dialogue? Thanks alot
September 11, 200223 yr NEVER, EVER, NEVER enable file sharing on a database server and NEVER, EVER, NEVER open database via a shared drive. A database server does not need to share file, it share databases. File sharing will only serve to slow down the server (in the best case) and in the worst case will provide a gaping hole in security and possibly corrupt your databases. Secondly always use the File Menu - Open - Hosts button to open databases. This insures that they are properly opened via Filemaker Server.
September 11, 200223 yr RE: I would like to know since we have a filemaker server for 10 seats. There is ONLY one FM server serving successfully up to 250 clients. And do the NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER stuff and always use the HOST button. That IS the only access to the shared databases.
September 11, 200223 yr Author And do the NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER stuff and always use the HOST button. That IS the only access to the shared databases. Every script in every database I should open and close with the Host button? ...Since before I link by physical files but not the button Host. What is the difference between files on the server and files in Server_Admin and open with button Host for what? When I want to share filemaker files ...what Am I supposed to do to speed up? Thanks.
September 11, 200223 yr 1) There should be no "sharing" of files in the conventional sense on the FM Server machine. The hard disk of the FM Server machine should not be directly accessible over the network. 2) The FM files on the FM Server machine should be opened directly by the FM Server application. I must be the only environment providing sharing of the database files. 3) On the client machines, the shared files should only be visible by launching FM and using the File --> Open --> Hosts dialog. If the FM files are available via Network Neighborhood or AppleShare you WILL suffer slow, unstable operation. -bd
September 11, 200223 yr RE: When I want to share filemaker files Set them to multi-user. Put them into server folder Start the FM server service On any client select Open and HOST. Nothing else, nothing more. Forget about all sharing and speed issues. I would also recommend editing them the same way, through HOST button. If your editing machine will crash, your database will be OK, because server is keeping that database.
September 12, 200223 yr Author Does it mean on any script that I have written I will select Open-host Botton? Thanks
