domb Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 Hello ! I wanted to export my database on my girlfriend ibook. I have a database containing links to pictures which are stored in a folder next to the database. I just copied the folder containing the database and the picture folder to my girlfriend ibook. Problem is that the database cannot find the pictures anymore !! Is there a solution to that ? Thanks for helping Polopo P.S. I am using filemaker pro 6 on mac os X 10.2.1. The database is quite huge with about 40 pictures linked.
Kurt Knippel Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 The images in your database are linked to a folder on YOUR drive i.e. G3 Harddrive:Database:MyPhotos) while on her iBook the folder is in a different location (i.e. My iBook:Database:MyPhotos). So Filemaker is unable to find them. The best way, especially with on 40 photos is to stick them diectly into the database, rather than as a reference.
danjacoby Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 This is a turkey in the software -- it should be able to save the relative path, so that when you move all the files but save the relative paths you don't lose the links. Perhaps in version 7...
domb Posted October 7, 2002 Author Posted October 7, 2002 Thank you for your answers. Is there a way to automate this (link to include pictures) or do I have to do this for each pictures. And do you know if the TROI-file plugin will be able to keep pictures accessible from other computers. Thanks. Polopo
Kurt Knippel Posted October 7, 2002 Posted October 7, 2002 You can use the Troi File plugin to adjust the reference if the path changes. For example a startup process could determine if the files are accessible and if not prompt the user for thier location and then change the path to that new location.
domb Posted October 8, 2002 Author Posted October 8, 2002 Thanks. Do you know if it is easy to setup ? If yes how ? Just an option to check ? Another thing: will I have to change my database fields and add all the links to the pictures again if I want to use this plugin ? Or is it possible to use it without doing this ?
BobWeaver Posted October 8, 2002 Posted October 8, 2002 Since this looks like a small scale solution, you can save some money by using applescript rather than the Troi file plug-in. There are some methods for automating image importing in the applescript forum.
SteveB Posted October 8, 2002 Posted October 8, 2002 The Troi plugin is very easy to use, and if you do any file manipulation I would highly recommend it. The plugin will store the path where you would normally store the photo (in a container field).
