Any benefit to putting graphics in globals?

Featured Replies

Other than the obvious - being able to change a graphic caross a solution by changing the object in a global container field -

I'm wondering if there is any speed/network/file size benefit from doing this?

Also - I know that graphics made in FMPro are more friendly to networks, etc. than a bitmap, JPEG, etc.. However, do you maintain this advantage by using global contianers rather than pasting them (FMPro graphics) directly onto the layout? In other words, do global contianers nuetralize any benefits particualr graphic types?

Bruce I would first sugguest you have a 1 record database in your solution where all files can look at this one record db.

The reason for this is that if you are on a Served solution changing a graphic in a global is not saved when you exit.

Another solution is to have a local database on each machine that contains all your graphics (were talking UI parts) you could via script distribute updates to the UI File. This way all UI calls are local and don't suffer from network traffic.

I have not seen any difference between pasting a graphic on a layout or in a field (Container or Global, Container) except that a lot of unoptomized graphics can cause network slowness.

I've used photoshop and just copy and past the images I need into the layout or container and I have had no problems with cross platform (I am developing on mac).

Hope this helps

Many thanks, that makes sense.

Got a question I should know the answer to since I've been playing with FMPro for many years now -

Is there a program (aka photoshop, etc.) or format that I can create a graphic in and have it "optimized" and as friendly as if I had made it in FMPro itself?

I recall a while back, something about claris draw and how those graphics were more friendly than a GIF/bitmap/ect.. I tried searching the archives, but my Attention Deficit Disorder style of working prevents me from finding any answers easily!
