October 30, 200223 yr I have a large relational database. One of the databases within it is an archived database that should be read only. We host the file on a server for referencing but do not want the users to be able to modify it. How can I set this particular file to view only? Also, is there a way to make it view only to certain passwords but writeable with othes.
October 30, 200223 yr Well, I can't help it ... I have to answer this one. All you have to do is copy your db to a Windows CD-RW then copy it back. It'll all be read-only EVERY time, whether you want it to be or not! Sorry about that, the smart people will answer your question also. But, that DOES work!!
October 30, 200223 yr Hi: Yes, you can make the file read-only, but that means that it is read-only for everyone. Also, the person can always just right-click on it and make the attributes archive again. Probably a more suitable way to do this is to: Go to File/Access Privledges/Passwords You can set up passwords for users and give them edit privledges, delete, printing and more. Ken
October 30, 200223 yr Author I'm using an iMAC and I do not see the access privledges under file. Is this in the Server or just PC? What is the equivalent of setting the read-only on a file by right clicking, it on Mac? Thanks
October 30, 200223 yr You need to pull the file off the server and open it locally to be able to edit the passwords and access privs. You really DO NOT want to make the actual file Read Only. This is a major problem with Filemaker as it does not make temp files, but actually uses the db itself for storing temp stuff. You just want to make the RECORDS in the db read only, do this with the passwords.
