Linking pdf documents with Web Companion

I have pdf documents on the hard drive of the host computer linked to icons in a container field. This works fine using the database. Clicking on the icon in the container field opens the pdf doc in Acrobat Reader. When the db is published on the web using IWP, the link does not work in the browser. Is there a solution? I am using windows. Thanks.
