Splitting a field into two or more fields

I am new to this forum and do not know the rules. I have filemaker pro 4.0 on a Mac.

I have a 15000 record database with a name field which includes first and last names of individuals. I want to split the names into a first name and last name field. How can I do that?

Welcom to the forum,

Our best sugguestion is to place your question in the most approporiate forum.

To answer your quesion,

Create 2 new fields, FirstName and LastName both text fields.

Back in browse mode, do a replace on the Firstname Field (after you have found all records. Your replace will be LeftWords(YourNameField, 1) do the same in the LastName Field except RightWords(YourNameField, 1)

This should work on most case but will not help you if you have names like Mc Donalds, or De Julio or John Q. Public. Your you might get duplicates if you have something like Cher, Madonna, or Sting.

Hope this helps.
