As Mark suggested, I'll open a new thread for this problem as I came up with exactly the same proble he encountered one year ago.

There is a small attachment in last post of this thread that will clearly show the problem, if you don't mind have a look.

old thread from 2002 not solved

This very little file has the basics PO-Line Item-Product-Customer files. Items are entered through a portal in the PO.

Customer ID an dCustomer Name are lookup but they have a strange behaviour.

When processing an entry from the Report PO file, you will notice that the Lookup for Client ID and Name in the Line Items will :

- not work if you select the Customer from list and jump immediately to the portal for an entry

- work if after selecting a Customer from list, you enter some data somewhere in another field in Report Layout (notes,..)

- work anytime you will process an entry within the second portal row

It seems strange to me that this could be a portal refreshing problem...this seems more like a value list not refreshing. Is this possible.

What would you recommand.

Thank you all.

Ciao Ugo

If you don't exit the master record the data you wrote isn't fully committed to that record and therefore lookups will turn out blank

This happens in the circumstances you mention, jumping from a master field to a portal field without clicking outside the field or doing something that will actually exit the record

Hi Giuseppe,

I thought I would have fixed it with an exit field script, but It doesn't as it seems I MUST enter some data somewhere on one of the layout field, then use this exit script, before going into the portal.

I'll find my way with this but I now understand that it's mostly a related record value list refreshing than a portal refreshing problem.

to get it work

I never use lookups, because they don't always ... uh ... well, look up.

I use auto-calculations, plus "Set Field" scripts, and never have those problems any more.

Thanks for the input Dan,

I was thinking of that litte " + " button in the header of the portal.

Anyway, in many circumstances, the simple "allow creation of related records" option isn't sufficient, as there can be some "conditions" or "controls" that only a script with an " if " or a "set field " can achieve.

Thanks again.

There are two flaws in your solution.

1) The look up in lineItems for cust name should be from customer file (after looking at cust ID from PO file of course)

(This is not influencing, however, the behavior of your solution)

and

2) Which solves your problem, the creation of records in PO should be scripted in this way:

Freeze Window

New Record

Exit Record

Go To Field [customer ID]

also change the format of the customerID from pop up menu to pop up list

DJ,

I'm so sorry I cannot rate you anymore. I'll ask Mark .

I was almost sure I would have needed an exit field script after choosing the Customer_ID. Not before entering it. confused.gif

This confirms one of my theory.

There is a strong influence of the Sun on performances (Italy, California and Australia are sunny places, right) grin.gif while I'm stuck with this cloudy days here in France.

Others would forgive me for that theory (I hope).

Anatoli, are you sure you want to come back to Czeck Republic. wink.gif

Thanks again DJ.

I need the lookup to be related to the PO in my Real file (there are some info from the customer file that may be changed in the PO...).

Hi,

Here is the test files back. I've made it an example file with 3 options as you can see the result from each method described above.

It may help someone here one day, as this was an issue not solved from 2002. Thanks again DJ and all of you that spent some time on this issue.

Yes, I've used too strong word, flaw.

Actually one could have very good reasons to use tunneled (look up from look up) values as you pointed.

Guess what, I was lizarding (taking sun) after the lunch.
