FM Server & FM Unlimited on same server?

Featured Replies

Can I run FM server and FM Unlimited on the same machine? I didn't know if the two would have conflicts or not. What are your thoughts?

John

Do not do it smile.gif

It can work, but why?

No, never do this is ANY database server.

First of all your machine is a DATABASE SERVER, not a web access machine. At best database serving will suffer, at worst you entire db will become corrupted.

Secondly both Filemaker apps will be fighting for the same system resources and both will universally suffer in performance.

Getting a secondary machine for Filemaker Unlimited is the way to go.

Ok! That's what I wanted to know. I thought we would want to get a new server to install FM Server but I needed some feedback to justify it.

Thanks for the input guys!

John

Not fastest processor, but fastest SCSI disk subsystem you can afford. Fast memory (DDR or RAMBUS), fast bus.

In case of windows machine, go with W2000 CLIENT, not SERVER and set background tasks to max.

BTW, to protect company (FM) server sitting in machine with full web access is not easy.

RE: Secondly both Filemaker apps will be fighting for the same system resources and both will universally suffer in performance.

In some degree yes. But FM server doesn't need that much CPU, Unlimited yes and FM server need the disks and FMU not. In most cases nobody will spot the difference on NT or W2k.

Data integrity will be more of concern and security is clearly the main reason -- for me.
