Newbies RobertK Posted April 2, 2003 Newbies Share Posted April 2, 2003 Hey all! We've been using FMS 5.5v1 on our MacOS X 10.2 Server for quite a while now. Since we have the 'regular' corruption problems, we figured, some scheduled backups during the day would entlighten our life a lot. So i put up a few schedules for backing up at certain times of the day (ie. 12.30 lunch start) to have FMS make a backup of the databases to a folder on a separate disk. No problem you'd say, but the weird part is, it doesn't backup! :S One schedule has run once, the other 3 have never. All schedules are enabled and the 'Run Schedules' menu item is checked on. Searching this forum, i couldn't find any earlier occurrence of this problem (i only browsed 2 pages of search results, searching for 'schedules' figured if it was a common problem, it should have been in there...) If anyone has a solution, it would be greatly appreciated, because this REALLY bites big time!
RodinBangkok
Robert, first server x is now at V2, suggest you upgrade.....the bad news is we experienced the same problem with V2, gave up with trying to figure out why and are using another program to backup. I am so dissapointed in FM products for X, especially server. We never had an issue with OS9, it ran for weeks unattended just a great package but FM has taken a giant step backwards with their X versions across the board. Sorry for the editorial....I'm also interested in an solution to this problem.
paulage77
I have noticed that back-ups do not occur if there are corrupt files being served. That is, if you check the server logs and you see that a file has been damaged or consistency checked since the last time Server was started then the backups seem to fail. Not sure if this is the case you guys are seeing. I also, see that if you move the files around after the server has started then the back ups, again, will not function properly. wwyngaard
I have exactly the same problem. Running server 5.5v2 on OSX 10.2. The schedules will run to a local drive if you set it to backup to the current user documents directory. We have tried to back them up to a second computer or across a wan and it will not work no matter what we try. The OS 9 server is much better. I will probably back rev the OS. dkemme
That is your problem. FMServer does not support backups of large files to another volume (or to or from a RAID drive). I always do the backup to the same volume, then use AppleScript to copy the backup to another volume (RAID).
paulage77
FYI, Back'ups to Firewire drives seem to work okay
Newbies mjoe Posted June 22, 2003 Newbies Share Posted June 22, 2003 I have a problem with external firewire backup only, the internal backup still works.I have been using it for a year with no problem.Sever 5.0.2 OS9.2.2 .When I reduced the file size (by deleting records , kept the deleted files on CD) that is when my problem started.I trashed the backup prefs file and started a new schedule. It still will not work. Any Ideas
dkemme
FMServer will not backup large files to any volume other than that which the served file resides on.
jfmcel
Maybe create an applescript to move the new created backup file to the external volume. (One method might be to use a Folder Action.)
paulage77
My post from 4/08 is no longer true. FM no longer back ups correctly, I have done what jfmcel has suggested. It seems Apple's scripting of the Finder is superior to FM's back-up to the firewire.
