I'm looking for an Email solution

I'm looking for a FIleMaker Pro solution that is primarily set up for sending Emails. Don't need anything real big and booming, just something that will get the job done and that I'll be able to modify for my specific needs. We will be sending maybe 300 to 500 Emails per day.

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks hj, That worked out great!

Maybe its because I've not been around FMP long enough, but I'm not real wild about plug-ins. Maybe I don't understand them well enough but, I think part of it is I don't like using something outside the database. I don't know maybe its just me!

Thanks again for the help,

Bill

No matter how you do it, you are depending on things external to basic Filemaker. If you don't use a plug-in, then you are using an external email application. You probably have less control over the email application than you do over an email plug-in which integrates more tightly with Filemaker.

Hi Bob,

RE: No matter how you do it, you are depending on things external to basic Filemaker. If you don't use a plug-in, then you are using an external email application.

I'm confused. HJ had me go and get "Email Directly from FileMaker 6.0 Without Plug-ins. I am using 6.0 so I got the information and it's working great. Maybe you could explain your comment more completely. I don't understand what you mean and I don't want to get started down the wrong path.

Thanks,

Bill

Basic Filemaker has no ability to directly connect to a network mail server and send email. That tech article specifies that you need to have an email client application installed on your computer: MS Exchange, MS Outlook Express, MS Entourage, Claris Emailer, Eudora, or OSX Mail. Filemaker is actually sending the mail out via whichever one of these email programs you have installed on your machine.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing. People use this setup regularly, and it works well. However, you have to bear in mind that if you move the database over to another machine that doesn't have the same email program installed (or possibly no email program installed) then you could get unexpected results.

Thanks Bob,

Now I'm starting to understand things a little better. My Emailing direct from 6.0 is working great, but I can see how it may not be a long term solution. Where can I go to get "just a plug-in"? It seems everyplace you go to all the web sites it's a full solution with contact files etc. All I want is a plug-in that I can add to "My Solution". I don't want to add someone else's files. So far everything I've read on Email plug-ins is as clear as dirt. I know it's because of my lack of knowledge. But is there anyplace I can go that will tell me in layman terms how to make the Email plug-in work? And can I in fact, add the plug-in to my solution without all the othr file overhaed?

Thanks Bob, I appreciate your help.

Bill

Hi,

If you go to www.cnsplug-ins.com and download a trial of their SMTPit plug in this has a PDF manual of all the functions along with sample databases showing how you can send the emails.

As Bob states, this allows you to send the emails from FileMaker without the need for ana external client.

You can send plain text, html or both at the same time. Also, you can really personalize each email as it is individual emails being sent as opposed to a group of email addresses in a single email.

And for a shameless plug you could check out the link at the bottom. Maybe this will help.

If you buy their plugin then you do not need the other file overheads, but will have to write all your scripts and code to make it work. See which is the best route for you.
