I have FMServer on a Dell PowerEdge 2500. I have two machines to choose from for WebServer + WSC and FMU. Which machine should I use for which, in terms of best performance?

1) Pentium 4 1.8 GHz, 512MB Ram

2) Pentium II 300 MHz, 128 Mb Ram

The Web Server will run W2K Server and IIS. The FMU machine will run W2K.

Thanks for the tips!

IMHO, get new fast machine for W2K server and IIS and FM Web Server Connector. Something like 1.4 GHz PIII or 2.4 GHz P4. Then use #1 for Unlimited.

Or use #1 for IIS and #2 for Unlimited.

New machine purchases are NOT an option. My predecessor who left rather unceremoniously just had the company spend something like 5 grand on new equipment. So unless anyone else has different outlook, I will go with Anatoli's suggestion.

It also depends on load and speed of disks etc.

If FMU will be the most taxed machine and there will be only few static pages with few users visiting the IIS, maybe the complete opposite will be better.

If users will be mostly generating heavy hits on databases go for fast machine with FMU and #2 for IIS.

This second post of Anatoli's fits better with what I was thinking. There are very few static pages, almost everything is a result of db interaction. However, I wasn't sure if it was worth giving FMU the better machine, because I'm not sure how much is processed on the FM Client (FMU) vs the FM Server (FMS). My understanding is that most of thw work is done on the Server side, although I think Sorting are Summarizing are done on the client. Is this correct?

Anyone else want to chime in?

Okay I am setting up today. Would feel much better if I could get a couple more opinions before I finalize. Is anyone out there?

Thanks-

Courtney
