Schalven Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 I am trying to import an excel spreadsheet into a filemaker database that has several related database fields in portals, such as phones, products and upc numbers. I can import all the data that goes directly into the main database but I have not figured out how to import the data that goes into the portal fields. Anyone out there that can help? Please.
Lee Smith Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 You should be importing the information directly into the related files, not into current file portals. Lee
Schalven Posted June 19, 2003 Author Posted June 19, 2003 How do I import the parts into the portals and the rest into the main database? Do I need a record number or something in the excell spreadsheet? How do I make sure all the information goes into the right record
Lee Smith Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 You should have some kind of a Relationship Key now in order to have a portal. Can't you use that for your import? How are you putting the information into the Current file? Lee
Schalven Posted June 19, 2003 Author Posted June 19, 2003 All of the original information is in an excel spreadsheet. New Information is put directly into the database. The database is a customer grievance database with Name, address, notes, and issues being in the main database and easy to import from the old spreadsheet. The information that I have in the portals is product ID's, with descriptions and prices that are on a popup in the portals. I can put a record number in the original spreadsheet and then import that into the related databases but will that link them all together in the end? I am not sure if I have explained this correctly. But thanks for any help you can give me
Lee Smith Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 I'm not following this I think. You say that the portal is key by Product ID? And the Information in the Portal is Product info. So, why are you needing to import into a portal database? Would the Product ID imported into the Current file produce what you need? Lee
Schalven Posted June 19, 2003 Author Posted June 19, 2003 I will ask this question in ignorance. Can I do everything I need in the current file? Have a drop down with all the product ID's and have it pull up the description and price. I was under the impression that I needed to have these related files to be able to pull up these pieces of information from the other places. Namely when I click on the ProdId box I can pull up the brand, ID, Desc, and price. Now I not sure if I am confusing myself too.
cjaeger Posted June 19, 2003 Posted June 19, 2003 look at the structure of your data. any one-to-one relationship can be imported into one database, no need for relations (or multiple databases) there. any one-to-many or many-to-many requires at least 2 separate imports.
