CarlosRabassa Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 I have an FMP database. It has several fields: text, numbers, dates and one container field where I keep a picture for each record. I want to select some of the records and export some of the fields, including the one with the picture to an html table for publication in our web site. I have not problem exporting all the fields very quickly and automatically, except for the pictures. I can add the pictures by hand. The result is fine but it takes a lot of work, time and risk of errors. I don't want to buy or set up the FMP version for the web; I don't need to give the viewers any searching capability. All they need is to see the table but they want it updated by us on a daily basis. Any way of exporting the pictures like I do the rest of the information? If too difficult for a non-expert like me, are there any experts that could resolve this problem for me for a fee? Thanks, Carlos Rabassa [email protected] 1800 875-9088 x 229
CarlosRabassa Posted August 7, 2003 Author Posted August 7, 2003 Does anyone have experience using Export FM, a plug in for FMP offered by New Millennium Communications? It sounds like the answer to my question.
Leb i Sol Posted August 8, 2003 Posted August 8, 2003 maybe: http://cssw.biz/exporter.html is better chioice ($$$ wise) I don't know... but as u know native FM does not export container fileds All the best!
Leb i Sol Posted August 8, 2003 Posted August 8, 2003 BUT: "I don't want to buy or set up the FMP version for the web; " --honestly this is really easy and will take as along as exporting (talking about setting up Instant web publishing on your machine) ones published all u have to do is Save As...HTML( from browser) and ur done... if this is one time export I will gladly do it for you! but these are just options-choices are yours All the best!
CarlosRabassa Posted August 30, 2003 Author Posted August 30, 2003 Thanks for your input. The solution you suggest seems to move pictures from a FMP database to a folder with individual pictures of the desired format and type. This is not my problem. I want to start with a database that contains photos, text, numbers and dates. I want to end up with an html page showing information from some records selected in the database, including a photo from each of the selected records and some other information. Thanks again. Carlos
Anatoli Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Reasonably simple task in CDML Custom Web Publishing. Although serving the pictures from FM is not the best practice! Get CDML Reference database and check the syntax.
CarlosRabassa Posted August 30, 2003 Author Posted August 30, 2003 Anatoli, thanks for your input. Unfortunately I am not a computer or FMP expert, I am just a user. So I'm afraid I cannot follow your advice. However, your reply makes me think that I didn't express my request clearly. I don't mind having to put the pictures in a folder in the internet, once for each record. What I want is to include those pictures in a table together with information that changes once a day. The same picture usually appears everyday for a few months, but in different positions in the table as compared to other records. The pictures are of houses for sale and they are placed in the table in order of price. When a new property goes for sale, many of those in the table will have to change positions to accomodate the new one; same for price reductions. Ideally I would like to export all the data in the table including a link to the picture residing on the server. Thank you all. Carlos
CarlosRabassa Posted August 30, 2003 Author Posted August 30, 2003 Leb I Sol thanks for your input; you left me so intrigued I am trying to read all I can about Web Companion and related topics. Your approach is different from everything I heard before and sounds really good. Thanks for your offer to do it once but this is something I do once a day; I update four tables in our web site. Would you mind clarifying a bit more the idea? I believe using FMP's Web Companion and file sharing, I could publish the pages I want to share in files in my own computer, imagining it is a server to be connected later on to the internet. However instead of connecting the computer as a server and let others view the tables, I would look at them myself and save them as html tables which later on I will upload to our site. Did I get the idea correctly? Thanks, Carlos [email protected] 1800 875-9088 x 229
Anatoli Posted August 30, 2003 Posted August 30, 2003 Carlos, sorry! I've assumed you are more close to developing for FM
jasonwood Posted August 31, 2003 Posted August 31, 2003 I haven't read the whole thread, but I think I get the jist of it so here's my suggestion... First you should name your pictures using the record number, so if the listing is listing #12345, your corresponding image is "12345.gif" Now make a script to build your page into a global field... you should already have the html blocks prepared. The first step would be to write the page header, then to write a block for each listing in the current found set (say 6 listings) so use... Set field [globalMyPage, (insert a whole bunch of html here)] Go to record, first Set field [globalMyPage, globalMyPage & "some html stuff" & recordNumberField & ".gif" & some more html & PriceField & some more html] Go to record, next Set field [globalMyPage, globalMyPage & "some html stuff" & recordNumberField & ".gif" & some more html & PriceField & some more html] ...etc... Set field [globalMyPage, globalMyPage & (footer html here)] Then just copy/paste the global field to create the html file. Remember, you always need to start with a found set of exactly 6 (or whatever you've planned for) listings, otherwise it'll just take the first 6 (this may be what you want in some circumstances).
CarlosRabassa Posted September 4, 2003 Author Posted September 4, 2003 Leb i Sol, a few days ago you made a very generous offer of doing one of these exports for me. I declined it because I had a promise from a consultant for an excellent solution which I never got from him; all I get are phone calls to discuss the "easy" solution but no solution. Your idea of using FMP Web Companion sounds simple and attractive, except for the fact I tried to use Web Companion several times along the years and never got anywhere. I wonder if you could help me; is there a way I can communicate with you directly by email or phone? I would like first to make a test and if it works, then hire you to give me detailed written instructions on how to do it. One of my concerns, for which I would like to start with a test is the size of the files. A very easy solution is for me to prepare a report as if I was going to print it on paper and save it as a pdf file but, the size of the resulting file is so large that is not acceptable for me to upload it to the site or for the viewers to see it. Please bear in mind I have a solid background on Electromechanical Engineering from many moons ago and I make my living as a Real Estate Broker; I am not an FMP developer or computer programmer. So the explanations I expect from you, if you accept the challenge, should be in plain English. Thanks a lot. Carlos Rabassa 1800 279-9000 x 229 1718 767-8748 [email protected]
