I have been developing and deploying a fmp 6 database for my company for two years now. The issue I keep having is one of unrecoverable data. We do quotes for people, so we have a bid db and sub db called bid areas. The areas db is not large (13mb), but it keeps getting corrupted. Now the question, What are any items I should be looking for in order to fix this reoccurring problem. i.e. shut downs, improper relationships, anything that might be causing this. We have 10 files that relate and the areas db is the only one with problems.

The main thing that comes to mind is be sure the files are being closed properly. Some users that are anxious to go home will just shut the computer off not closing the files properly. This will surely corrupt the files with time. The files should be on a decicated machine and opened via file>open>hosts ONLY. HTH

Is file>open remote the same thing? That is how we have done it to this point.

File->Open Remote is the same thing, as you can see the 'Hosts' title on the window. Best is an opener file that opens the necessary files from the host automatically and has each Open [ ] step pointing to the correct ip.

Yes as Quueue poited out an opener file is best. This also keeps you from being prompted again and again for a password. How many users do you have accessing the databases. The reason I ask is.....If you have 6 or more Purchasing Filemaker Server would be helpful. We are using it for 18 databases and the scheduled backups is worth the price. Not to mention the considerable increase in speed.

Queue,

RE: I don't want to work. I just want to bang on the drum all day.

Go for it! I'll lay down a rhythm and you just jump in. grin.gifwink.gif

I have never poited in my life! crazy.gif

I guess you can call me QDoubleU now?

That can be shortened to QW

Why not? I've been QT (if you've seen my real picture, not the Wakko one, you might comprehend) for long enough anyway.

Server is another issue. We have it, but have not been able to get it to work properly. One thing at a time as it were. Is there anything we should be doing for maintaince? I know with ACT we needed to.

Seth

What problems are you having with FMS?

Michael

"Server is another issue. We have it, but have not been able to get it to work properly."

That's your FIRST issue to get working correctly.

IMHO FileMaker Server is practically a non-brainer to set up and use. Read the FMS white paper for tips on setting it up sweetly. Most important thing is for FMS to have its own box.

Get Server running!

I run a db structre with about 40+ db's. Before server I was rebuilding about once ever 2-3 weeks. got to be such a pain that I scripted most of the rebuild , now thats bad.

After server I rebuild maybe once or twice a year. Just make sure server is on a stable machine.

Get Server running!

I run a db structure with about 40+ db's. Before server I was rebuilding about once ever 2-3 weeks. got to be such a pain that I scripted most of the rebuild , now thats bad. Most of the probs were crashing hosts (not always FMP but other programs that were concurrently running, and lost network connections- even a second or so of lost network causes fmp to stop responding)

After server I rebuild maybe once or twice a year. Just make sure server is on a stable machine.
