Steve N Posted November 13, 2003 Posted November 13, 2003 I just bought and installed server 5.5. FM claimed automatic back ups, but I can not get it to back to a different computer. Why would anyone backup to the same computer the file is stored on? Am I missing something here?
Charles Delfs Posted November 13, 2003 Posted November 13, 2003 On the task scheduler section of the FMP Server Console, select "Task Scheduler" and follow the wizard, when you get the part that asks for "Choose a backup destination Folder" hit browse.. then navigate via the "My network places" to you target machine. Alternativly you can map the storage drive as a local drive. Works for me Charles
Anatoli Posted November 13, 2003 Posted November 13, 2003 The advantage in storing backup to local machine is speed. You don't want to block users from work with network transfer. Also you can backup to another HD on the same server and once in day/week burn CD for off-site storage.
Kundinger Posted November 13, 2003 Posted November 13, 2003 Hi Steve, I use a similar config as to what has been mentioned... I set the FMP server to backup to a second HD on the same server computer... I then have another server (called a backup server in another location) perform backups of all network servers. This backup server has a number of high-speed HDs that store multiple backups of each network server. Based on 16 years of experience and training... I personally prefer to utilize Dantz RetroSpect Server Backup running on Mac OSX as the backup server. At all my client organizations this configuration operates on Apple G-3/4/5 mini-towers with multiple high-speed HDs (some SCSI, some SCSI RAID, and some ATA). This config will backup Mac OS and WinTel OS servers... has no need for on-site personnel to interact with backup tapes or discs... and performs automatically... "Out-of-Sight... Out-of-Mind". Hope this will give you some insight into other backup options! Bob Kundinger [email protected]
dkemme Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 Using the Retrospect server backup scenario, does filesharing need to be running on the machine running Filemaker Server?
Kundinger Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 Hi Doug, Sorry for the delay... my FMForums profile is messed up... it's not sending me replies to my posts. Quick answer to your question... NO, filesharing does not need to be running on the RetroSpect Server. Explanation... I typically configure RetroSpect Server Backup to run on a dedicated computers... as a "Backup Server". This is not used for any other server function. These 'backup servers' are setup to only backup other servers on the network, and a few user workstations. Hope this helps... Bob Kundinger [email protected]
Steve N Posted November 21, 2003 Author Posted November 21, 2003 Thanks for everyones help. I failed to mention I am on OS 10.1.5, that may be my problem. I have never understood the way 10 does users/networking. When I click "back up to specify" there is no network options that come up. I have the volume mounted on my desktop that I want to back up to, but when I click on desktop (under task scheduler) nothing shows up in the pane next to it.
dkemme Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 If you are using OSX make sure you have FMServer 5.5 v4 or you will not be able to backup large files to any other volume than the one serving the file.
Steve N Posted November 24, 2003 Author Posted November 24, 2003 Thanks again for your help. The update to v4 solved the problem I mentioned. It also solved a problem of the server not shutting down properly and damaging files, if it were not for manual back ups I would have lost 8 years of data. I guess the lesson is don't assume any software you buy is up to date. I bought this software 10/31/03 and it was v2. The v4 was released 2 weeks before.
dkemme Posted November 25, 2003 Posted November 25, 2003 I agree with that lesson. I has many corollaries. My favorites are: never be the first or the last to update to new version; always test new versions prior to implementing; always check this forum for problems prior to installation...
