November 23, 200322 yr Hello, I have noticed that when I use value lists as pull down menus or lists inside of a portal, that when the user goes to make these choices, related record, by related record, the other fields in the entire portal flash...like disapper and reappear. It is not changing the values, but it is a little disturbing when entering information. T This is happening in an invoices file where the user is pulling up a style number and then making choices individual to each invoice of size or color ordered. Each time you pull the pull down menu, all the other fields disappear for a second.. is this an indexing problem or do i need to put a certain preference on each portal? thanks so much.. ami
December 12, 200322 yr This is something that happens... as far as I can tell, selecting from a value list (pull-down, for example) forces the whole layout to redraw. It's just the way FileMaker is programmed. I've found that some users are totally freaked-out by this, in which case I've had to redesign layouts to prevent this. It just happens in portals, and, well, you've just got to get used to it, I'm afraid. I don't think it is indexing, but I've never bothered to look into that. -Stanley
December 12, 200322 yr Hi: If this is viewed through a portal, then indexing must be turned on for at least one field so that the relationship works. But it is not supposed to make things slower, it's job is to speed up the reference. Stanley is right, there is a redraw, but it should be only a split second, not very long at all. How long is the delay? Ken
December 12, 200322 yr Hi, I may be wrong. From my little observations, fields would flash in a portal if they are allowed modifications. So you could turn it off and script a go to field if necessary. Fields would disappear with value lists, but only when creating a record through a portal set to allow creation of related records. Actually, the entire portal could disappear with pull-down lists. So turn that relationship option off and script any creation of related record.
