mattlight Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 Hello guys & gyals, I want to create a database that keeps a track on versions of documents of any data type. I want to use a Filemaker database as the interface to open, create and edit all documents using any external packages. What I need the database to do is have the following information: field 1: document field type: object (stores a shortcut to a document dbl click opens the document - tried and tested) field 2: document_path: where the document is on the data server field 3: version_number: known by latest date/time field 4: Author of the document field 5: Creation Date field 6: Creation Time This database is to be viewed via a portal which is from a JOB reference. The documents are then sorted according to the version and contain information as to who last edited, created, added, etc. The hard bit I think is teaching a company a different culture of locating files on a data server. Having to use Filemaker to locate files is definately training a company to go against what they know - but it will stop people from working on a version of a file (of any type) and later find out they are working on the wrong one. My technical Filemaker related questions are: 1. Right clicking on an object field allows me to insert a shortcut to a file and store an icon representing the file. How do I get it to write in another field, the location of that file? 2. Am I able to create a new document by starting off adding a new document name into this object field and hence opening the relevant software to create it? I went into INSERT OBJECT, Create NEW, Select Software package (I selected MS Word for the experiment)to use, but it comes up with a message saying "Filemaker cannot complete the operation due to an OLE (Ox80004002) type error" - I repeated the operation but used Bitmap Image file as my chosen format with no problem. If I can have the answers to the two questions - you will be saving my neck. I have already posted this into importing and outputting but now realise I was in the wrong forum - forgive me if you've already tralled through this in the other forum - answers would be very nice thoug Thank you
-Queue- Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 It's not criticizing to tell someone not to double post. Don't get all bent out of shape over someone informing you of your mistake. Just move on and don't make it again. If you want to annoy someone in the forums in less than ten seconds, double posting is probably the best way to do it. If you want your post to be completely ignored otherwise, then by all means continue. It isn't anything personal; we just hate it and will not be cooperative or tolerant of those who do it. It's a rule that you learn once and never again forget. Deal with it. Learn it. And stop whining about it. Post all you want--just make sure it isn't the same thing twice--and you'll find your time here quite pleasant.
dbruggmann Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 No double post on this site ever got past Lee! But otherwise he's really a more than handsome
Lee Smith Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 [color:"red"]I have removed my post mattlight said: Generally, people do not reply to an issue by saying "don't know and by the way, you've spelt though without a h" - reply means reply - if you are the kind of person who gets worked up over the smallest of issues, then I am sure you find larger tasks a real treadmill. Obviously you don't read this list often! mattlight said: If you are[color:"blue"] readin this Lee, I sent you a private message saying sorry and then I thought, why? You are not moderator, you are a fellow member who from time to time needs help - don't come in here to[color:"blue"] critisize - either help or be helped but be grateful! [color:"blue"] People that live in Glass Houses shouldn't throw rocks You are correct, I'm not a moderator. I see you have a whole 94 posts. I did a quick review and the best I can tell, the posts are all about the Questions that YOU have asked. None are response to others - Interesting. Now, take a look at the number of posts I have. Over 1450. Do you know how many questions that I have ASKED. Maybe 4 or 5. The rest are in replies to others who were seeking help. In the future, it might be wise for you to know what the Hell you are talking about before you shoot off your mouth. mattlight said: I thank all those who have helped me over the last two years in here - and I hope I've returned the compliment from time to time. And it will be a Cold day in ...... Lee
Vaughan Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 Matt The problem with double-posts is that some people answer the first one, others answer the second one. Usually the same answers. Lots of duplication. Lots of time wasted. I for one don't mind freely giving my time and knowledge, and I'm sure it's the same for the other "usual suspects" here in the Forums. However I *hate* having my time wasted, and double-posing does just that. As you leave, Matt, see the receptionist for a full refund. And have a great rest-of-your-life. As for Lee not being a moderator yet... I'm sure things could be arranged.

-Queue- Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 Gah! I'll wear banded shirts with the 'tie' printed on them, but no ties! If that were enforced, I'd have to spend my time at the Cafe instead, where it's nice and casual.
Vaughan Posted December 11, 2003 Posted December 11, 2003 I think Lee would make a great moderator. He generally keeps his cool. But Queue and John, guys, you've got it the wrong way around: we wouldn't have to wear ties, *he* would have to wear mufti.
Lee Smith Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 ROTHLMAO Thanks for all of the kind words guys. When I retired 5 years ago, I promised myself that I would not be in charge of anything, except for the Remote of course. Okay Vaughan, I'll bite - What's a mufti. BTW, it's an old picture.
Vaughan Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 Mufti -- I thought is was a NA term. It seems to refer to a "non-uniform" day at school or work. I have no idea what it actually means, whether it's an acronym or something.
mattlight Posted December 12, 2003 Author Posted December 12, 2003 I am sincerely sorry to Lee - I took it all the wrong way. No offence was intended. Lee, I respect your reply to me: Quote "In the future, it might be wise for you to know what the Hell you are talking about before you shoot off your mouth." You are right - please accept my apologies. What a moody bugger I was yesturday. If I've rubbed anyone up the wrong way over this then I'm sorry. From my angle I just couldn't believe someone went to all the trouble of critisizing what I thought was not alot to be worked up over. I have a lot to learn about Forum culture. However, Lee, I would like to see you change your picture with one where you're wearing dungerees and a camal hair hat - anyway, is it even you in the picture? You never know, maybe it's someone else - downloaded a picture of someone looking quite sensible and knowledgable. Cone to think of it, you look like the guy at the beginning of an English release of a film who tells the audience that "this film is rated C for caution due to strong violence and nudity" - hehe Anyway, I hope we can move on from this without everyone thinking I was really out of order. I should have thought before I spoke. I might live in a glass house but I grow some mean looking tomatoes!
mattlight Posted December 12, 2003 Author Posted December 12, 2003 I know, Cone - spelt corectly, wrong word Come lol

mattlight Posted December 12, 2003 Author Posted December 12, 2003 phew! I hope that you mean I have a chance of being back in the good books - I feel pretty grim about it all. Bad feeling feels bad! "Welcome Back" - thanks dude!
dbruggmann Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 Sure. Take -Queue-'s advice: "Just move on and don't make it again." Start your post over, after the weekend, with a new title, in the forum that suits best your needs
mattlight Posted December 12, 2003 Author Posted December 12, 2003 very true but I just don't like a 'bad choice of words' left here if it can be removed. I hope that people will be able to work out for themselves that the general issues in this forum (completely unrelating to the original question - lol) is that a Forum is not a place to have a slagging match or get angry or annoyed with each other - we come here to get help or give it. We all learn something, I learnt what I didn't expect to. Peace and Respect
Ugo DI LUCA Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 Actually, how hard an offense is "Post deleted by" ? Queue said:no ties! If that were enforced, I'd have to spend my time at the Cafe instead, where it's nice and casual I know some Caf
mattlight Posted December 12, 2003 Author Posted December 12, 2003 Points taken - lol I clicked on that link - oooooooohhhhh my word - now there is a cat scrap - some bloke called beige has something to say 3/4's down the page aye! You guys should check it out, it's a b*t@hing match about who's better - FileMaker, SQL, Access (hehe) or your mum's house. By the sounds of it, it never was resolved in there - it's just monkey tennis! Oh, and your grand-da was a very wise person. My dad says, "it's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it"

-Queue- Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 Scary, Ugo. But I was referring to The Cafe. I rescind my verbal battery of the accused. Welcome aboard, Matt!
