FM4 -locking down the server?

Featured Replies

Using V4 over the web. Unfortunately, I have a "colleague" who insists on inputting and importing at the server, which most times results in an error message when trying to use the database on the web. Can I lock the database without requiring a password on the web? Can I lock the computer down? Hope someone can help! [email protected]

FileMaker Version: 4

Platform: Mac OS 9

Hmmm... you need to keep FMP running so you cannot log out or do anything that closes the file. It's ben a while since I used MacOS 9, is there an option to make the screensaver ask for a password? That'd be the best bet.

Either that or put the machine in a secure environment.

Hi, bac! Yeah, screensaver's probably the way to go... lots have password requirements. Look for one you can also auto-launch at startup so he cannot just re-boot to bypass it. We also used to have a server in a quasi-public computer lab so we'd disable the monitor and take away the keyboard/mouse and that kept most folks from even bothering to try tampering. You can also have FMP hide the db's and hide layouts; you could also change the layouts so the text matches the background so he can't see data. Ultimately, all of this is defeatable, of course, but you can make it as painful a process as possible, eh?
