I want a to open all related files when I open one file. Is there a way to do this without using a script. If not, does anyone know how to create a script to do this?

Thanks

Hi Mike

So long as all your related files aren't going to get moved around (and you can do something about it even if they are, but that's beyond my ability) you can do the following.

1. Create a script called OPEN SCRIPT in the main file (master file) - the one you open first.

Freeze Window

Open [Open hidden, "fileName 01"]

Open [Open hidden,"fileName 02" ]

Open [Open hidden,"fileName 03" ]

Open [Open hidden,"fileName 04" ]

Open [Open hidden,"fileName 05" ]

... so on

Refresh Window [bring to front]

The open hidden option is optional.

Then in your master file, choose document preferences and select

"When opening "Master File""

- Perform Script - OPEN SCRIPT

The way to open all files without a script is to make a layout that has a related field from each file on it. The fields can be tiny and/or transparent or sent to the back so that they're not visible.

So, you could set a document pref to go to this layout at startup. But what if that's not the layout you want the user to be on? You do have more control with a script. Why not use a script?

A way to open all of the related files without a script is to have the main file open to a layout with at least one related field for each of the other files. You could even make the layout background, field fills and text colors all the same so the user won't see anything while on that layout.

BUT...

You should be running an open script anyway, so the best advise is to use the script steps that Andy described.

Thanks for your responses. While I was waiting for a response, I figured it out. I did exactly what Andy said. I have nothing against using a script. I just was not sure if there was a check box somewhere that would do it.

It is working great.

Thanks
