Keith Cannataro Posted July 4, 2004 Posted July 4, 2004 I have a table Dogs, with one entry for each dog. I have one table for Vet Visits and one table for Shot Records. These 2 tables have a lookup for dog name in the Dog table. As far as I can see when I compare these 2 tables things look the same. The problem is, for the Vet Visits, on the dog name field, the list of dog names pops up as I wish, BUT on entering data in the Shot Records, the dog names will NOT pop up. I'm stumped. If someone wants I can send screen shots of the questioned fields, definitions and relationships. Thanks.
-Queue- Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 If you could post a clone or simplified sample of your file, we could be of more assistance.
Keith Cannataro Posted July 7, 2004 Author Posted July 7, 2004 I have a clone of the db, but how/where do I put it so someone can check to see what I did wrong. thanks.

Keith Cannataro Posted July 8, 2004 Author Posted July 8, 2004 I have now attached a clone (zipped) of my Dogs database. If you can help me out, please read the details on this post and this one on portal problem. http://www.fmforums.com/threads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/113254/an/0/page/0#113254 I am wondering if FM is less sophisticated than I thought and that all the things I expected that were built in must be controlled with scripts. Please check it out and thanks for any help. DogsClone.fp7.zip
-Queue- Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 It does help if you format the Dog Name field on the Shot Record layout to be a pop-up list also.
Keith Cannataro Posted July 8, 2004 Author Posted July 8, 2004 Ahhhh, I see it was very simple, as that is exactly what I had setup for the Vet Visit table Dog Name field.....however, I am not sure if FM has what I was expecting without creating scripts? What I expect is to NOT use Value Lists for the Shot Records and Vet Visits. What I am expecting, because Dog Name is on both these 2 tables and there is a lookup linking Dog Name in each of those tables to Dog Name in the Dogs table, is that when I go to Dog Name field in Vet Visit or Shot Record, the only names that pop up are those contained in records in the Dogs table. A similar example. I have a table Vet Clinic and a table Vets. The Vets table links to Vet Clinic via Clinic Name. When entering records in table Vet Visit or Shot Record, when I get to the Clinic Name field, I was expecting the list displayed is taken from Clinic name of records in Vet Clinic. Additionally I am expecting that the Doctor names that are pop up displayed to select are only those doctors at the Vet Clinic that was selected in the previous field. Plus, still uncleare of what is wrong of why the Portal records are not displaying. Thanks again for any additional help.
-Queue- Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 You do want to use value lists, but you want to specify 'Use values from field', select your Dogs table, and then the field Dog Name. Do the same thing for your Clinic Name. For Doctors, 'Use value from field' Vets::Doctor, 'Include only related values starting from' Vet Clinic. This is what you call a conditional value list.
Fenton Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 I answered the question of why your portals aren't working, with an upload of your file, on another thread. Now you see why posting more than 1 question about the same thing is not a great idea. http://www.fmforums.com/threads/showflat...true#Post113874 There is a problem with your conception of how relationships and lookups work together.
Keith Cannataro Posted July 9, 2004 Author Posted July 9, 2004 Thanks folks. The info you provided got my problems solved for both table lookup and for the portal problem. Appreciate your help.
