Newbies gustadlf Posted July 6, 2004 Newbies Posted July 6, 2004 Hi everybody. First of all, I would like to thank you for all the support and experience you have shared with the filemaker comunity. I've been a regular visitor for almost 2 years, and always have found the solution without even need to post it - someone else has done it before. That's not the case for my current problem. We have some databases published on the internet, but some of ours customers can't connect to it. Our configuration is as follow: ADSL Router An static IP address 1 windows machine for Filemaker Server - XP - port 5003 for tcp/ip connection. 1 mac machine for serving databases to web - using Filemaker 5 - port 591. We tried to use port 80 for web companion but our isp provider use that port for the router (an ADSL router) and they said it can't be redirected to any machine in the lan. Any info would be greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance. Gustavo Chirinos
Leb i Sol Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 Hi Gustadlf! Not sure what setup ur trying to achive but one thing should stand the truth...your ISP can NOT ever tell you that they have resevered the port 80 for the IP theat they gave you....and if they trully did I would reconsider ISPs. Being that sometimes we cant choose them I would suggest to double check one thing: 1 mac machine for serving databases to web - using Filemaker 5 if it is "just plain old FM 5" then your vistior limit in 10 users in 12 hrs web or remote. I dont think its the port issue...as u said it "some users" also, I assume that they access your "site" by http://x.x.x.x:PORT_NUMBER vs. jsut the IP http://x.x.x.x since your port 80 is blocked wite some more about the setup and what that XP machine is serving To me, it sounds like your ISP is trying to save some IPS and doing port-routing ....possibly so that they can have internal webservers. Sounds like you should keep pressuring them to get more info on "why" they are blocking port 80... Take care!
Newbies gustadlf Posted July 6, 2004 Author Newbies Posted July 6, 2004 The 10 users limit is not the issue - we are sure about this - we have only have a few customers connecting to the database. The isp provider told us port number 80 is reserved for the ADSL router. From our lan if we try our ip address, then we get a dialog asking for permission to access the router configuration. We have tested connecting from outside lan (through web) using http://<our ip address>:591 and it works. But some customers can't connect to it. Gustavo
Will Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 Since some users can connect then you need to narrow down what's different between those that can and can't connect. What error message(s) do they get when they try to connect to http://ipaddress:591? What happens when they ping your IP address?
Leb i Sol Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 in that case login into your router and check the logs for what Will suggested. It also might be that the ISP is blocking certain IP ranges that they consider "intruders" to their network Also, check the LOG in FM "Access.txt" to see if FM is gereating any errors.....good luck!
Steve T. Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Hi, Gustavo! Leb and Will have you on the right track, but here are some other things to consider... (1) static IP address If you have 1 static IP for the router, the router might be able to be configured to re-direct :80 traffic to your desired web server (IP something like 168.192.x.x ?). If not :80, then :591 may need to be.. but I see you already have that going.. good. (2) :591 Your customer's ISP or customer LAN's may block :591. I have seen folks block every port except the ones they KNOW they need to have open... :591 may not be known as a common web port since it is registered to FileMaker. Try :8080 instead, which is commonly known as an alternate web port. --ST
Newbies gustadlf Posted July 7, 2004 Author Newbies Posted July 7, 2004 Thanks for your advice. The strange point is we tested using a Mac to connect from outside lan (through web) and it works. But when using Windows it can't. Looking in the web I saw a message from someone with a similar problem and they resolve it by inactive the UDP in the router... But that's beyond my understanding. So I wanted to hear from someone with the similar problem. Gustavo
Newbies gustadlf Posted July 12, 2004 Author Newbies Posted July 12, 2004 Hi everybody. I changed the port for web companion to 8080, and now we can access the database from web (no lan) even if it's under windows, but there is one customer that still get the usual explorer message "The page cannot be displayed...". Is there any way I could remotelly ping from the customer address? I guess not, but as Will sugested to use it for track our address. Any other sugestion? Regards Gustavo
