Brewser Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Hello, This is driving me crazy, because I can't seem to find a solution to what seems to be an easy problem. I have a notes field that I have setup to be 4 line of text with a scroll bar. When you get to the end of the first line of text when typing it will go to the next line (works great). But if you are in the middle of a word when it needs to go to the next line, it will continue that word on the next line. How can I tell Filemaker if the last word on the line does not fit move it to the next line and so forth. This seems like it should be just a built in function. I can't seem to find anything in the help files regarding this. Thanks
MoonShadow Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 You don't need to worry about where a word ends in the field. The text will automatically wrap appropriately, depending upon the size of your text field. So, if you place this field in a report and specify its size, any text will wrap to stay within the size of the field defined on the report. How are you forcing Users to only enter four lines? Lines, to FileMaker, are determined by hard returns (CR), not where they appear in the field. If I missed your point, please say a bit more.
Brewser Posted July 12, 2004 Author Posted July 12, 2004 Thanks, It is doing a word wrap, but I don't want part of the last word on one line and the end of the word on the next. Here is an example if it will show up properly: "when you are typing a lin e it will cut off the word s so it looks confusing to the user" I would like this: "When you are typing a line it will cut off the words so it looks confusing to the user" This is a form layout that I want to give the user the ability to add notes. I hope this example shows what I mean. It is hard to explain. Thanks again.
Brewser Posted July 12, 2004 Author Posted July 12, 2004 Ok, I see now what you are saying. Filemaker shows 4 lines but it is really only one line to Filemaker. How can I setup a notes edit box so that the words will not get split as it goes to the next line? Is it possible?
MoonShadow Posted July 13, 2004 Posted July 13, 2004 Hmmm, words should not be splitting mid-word and it isn't normal behavior. A few possibilities and maybe others have ideas ... 1) Your Users are reaching what they 'perceive' to be the end of the field and are hitting return in the middle of a word. 2) You have placed your text field on the layout ... and then have changed your font size. I have seen them jump out of kilter if the box has been mis-sized. But I can't make 7 do it at all and it behaves appropriately no matter how I change the text box. 3) You might check Field Behavior > Set Input Method To and see if something funky is selected here. Or even in Edit > Preferences > Fonts. I am very weak on font settings, I'm afraid. I only use Verdana and all the default font settings. I can't imagine any other reasons it might be working in such an odd manner, sorry.
Brewser Posted July 13, 2004 Author Posted July 13, 2004 I found it finally. Man I don't know how I ever unchecked this box, but here is what I found in the help file and it works: Use Roman language line-breaking Control standard Roman language line-breaking, including word wrapping. This option is enabled by default. If this option is disabled, letters and spaces are treated equally as symbols, and Roman language words are not treated as units. Instead, a word will wrap to the next line when it exceeds the width of the field or text block, which could occur in mid-word. Unreal. Thanks for the help.
