Open Remote...Can I type in IP address in a WAN?

Featured Replies

I thought you could launch FM6 and type in an IP address under Open Remote, and connect to a shared database OUTSIDE the LAN...aka the WAN. All the manuals say "LAN." Basically, I've been using Timbuktu to connect to a database (mac to mac) and would rather figure out the firewall settings and go direct (FM6 to FM6). I've tried and no luck. Internally, at the office everyone can connect.

Yes, you connect from outside the LAN. On the remote machine, under Open Remote (or Hosts), select Specify Host... Then enter the public, static IP of the FMP host.

If the host's LAN is using NAT addressing, this could be a problem. You would have to map port 5003 to the FMP host.

If the host has a firewall, you have to allow outside traffic in, on port 5003. Firewalls usually allow you to narrow down which outside IPs have access to which inside IPs for each port.

Here's the techinfo:

Does the host machine have to be running FM server for this to work? How about with FM7?
