FMP 7 - portals accessing data in repeating fields

Featured Replies

In FMP6 I had two related databases (goals and goal_bank) and used a relationship and to create a portal in goals that access information stored in a repeating field in goal_bank.

I've tried to recreate the relationship in FMP7, now using two tables instead of two files. The relationship partially works - only the first entry from the repeating field shows up. If I reimport the records and split the repeating field into separate records, the relationship works. Has anyone else experienced this?

I really want to keep the data as originally designed - it's simplest for the data entry.

I answered your post in the Cafe a few hours ago.

Thanks for the response! Of course I'm hoping for a better one - one that doesn't require I redesign several layouts!

The only work-around I've encountered is to make each repetition a related record in a table specifically designed to replace the repeating field and script every change to that table.

You are going to be much better off biting the bullet as soon as possible and ditching the repeating fields. Though there are some clumsy workarounds, you basically cannot report, find, isolate, individually delete, etc. with repeating fields. It really isn't much work to switch to portals.

I hadn't thought about using portals for the data entry. I usually use them to pull information together. Thanks for the thought and direction. This is my first visit to the Forum...I'll be back.
