Relationship Searching levels

I was just setting up a contextual nested portals on link here:

As a solution to find people related to people etc (basically it just a file with contacts and a file with holds contact IDs and relationships between the 2). But how would you go about setting up a way of searching how 2 people are related

i.e say I know MR B and I want to know MR E

So I would need to know that MR B knows MR C who know MR E

but this is only 1 level. and so I would do a simple search which compares the relationships of both.

but say MR B know MR C who knows MR D who knows MR E

I would need to do another level of searching and I'm just not sure how you would structure this? Has anyone done any realtionship searching that does this?

Any help would be great!

Hi, Simon. If you want to get more than two levels deep, you almost have to upgrade to version 7. Trying to do this in version 6, while not impossible, will be extremely difficult from a logic persepective. What you ask would be difficult even in 7's much more robust environment.

My two guesses as to why you hadn't got a response till now:

1. Most of the smarties were at DevCon when you posted;

2. You have 207 posts, all of which are questions as far as i can tell. Time to start giving back some of the help you have been given, Simon.

Not because I've done it, but you can get some ideas with the MultiLevels example I posted at http://www.fusiondzign.com

When in the folder area, play with the "show only related" checkbox or open/close folders.

This file accepts up to 8 levels deep, while the simplified version, accepts up to 10 levels.

I'm working for a 7 update right now.

But I'm quite sure I already reported it to you.

Ugo DI LUCA yes you did tell me that before when I was discussing display this is a searching question not a display question. I have kind of settled with leaving this a graphical search at the moment until i have more data in there to play with. I don't think its impossible just rather slow to process!

I have been using filemaker not even a year now I don't class myself as at a level where I can tell others things but I will "give back" when I am and I come across a post I know!

Hi,

In this kind of "relationships", you'd better use relationships for your search rather than a find itself.

As each record relate to the other through a key, you got the key, from which a portal would show all related contacts, either you're looking from the last level or from the first level of the "Tree".
