Developer tool and software

Featured Replies

new here. I installed the filemaker developer and have some questions about it.

When I open Developer, it looks exactly like FileMaker Pro. When should I use Developer? When I design a new DB for my company, do I do it in FM Pro or in Developer then transfer to Pro?

I also tested the Developer Tool. Other than creating .exe file that we can show clients the design demo, what other purposes does it serve?

I think the bottom line is that I am not quite sure the relations between Developer and Pro, and the purpose of using devloper regularly?

Thanks

Developer is exactly the same as Pro, but with some stuff added:

- script debugger

- developer tools to create runtimes, rename files while updating internal references, ...

- the Database Design Report creator

The DDR and the Script Debugger are probably the most helpful of these. I also use file renaming frequently when working with in-house developers so as not to create any interference with live hosted files and our development files.

So I can use Developer to design and create db. And end users with Pro on their machine can still open/view/use the DB, correct?

Thanks

Yes. But if you create a runtime file, your end users don't need to have FMP installed on their machines!
