Importing ignores first value of each line

Featured Replies

I am having some odd importing problems after upgrading to filemaker 7. I have tried using tab and cvs files as well as a few others that filemaker supports, and the only one I can get to work is an actual .fp7 file.

My problem is that while importing records the first value (order number) gets ignored. I can't get the order number to import into any field, but I CAN get other stuff to import into the order number field, so I don't think its the fields fault. I have tried different line endings and encoding, but that didn't do a thing.

The current work around would be to add the order number to the end of the file and use that one instead, but we still need to fix a problem.

Hi Jake

Welcome to the forum,

I'm not aware of any bugs in v7 that would explain this problem. If you were using an earlier version, I would suggest that the problem resides in your source data and tell you to post a sample of it. You still might want to do that so we can see what you are dealing with.

What is the field definition for the field that will not import? Is it posible that it is what is prohibiting the import?

I just made a new test file with a bunch of empty fields and imported my file successfully, so I don't think the file itself is the problem. Here is a test piece of information that I was trying to import

1234 111 222 333 description1 444 555

1234 777 222 333 description1 444 555

I tried making a completely new text field to import into and it still did the same thing, not import the first piece of data (1234).

This could be some kind of bug in v7, as I got it to work.

I just took the data you posted.

I Pasted it into a blank text document, and then saved it as generic text document.

I then opened FileMaker 6 and selected Open from the menu, and then selected the text document I had just saved.

FileMaker put each piece of information, including the lead 1234 into their own field.

I could attach both files here for you to compare if you want.

My question was not about the file you were importing from, but about the file you were importing to. I would like to see the field definition for the first field.

It may be a bug in 7, because it has worked fine in 6 for over a year. I think I might have to use one of our two incidents of tech support with filemakers support line.

Thanks for the help

.. it has worked fine in 6 for over a year

I would have appreciated knowing this little tid bit before now.

I don't know what's going on with yours. This works fine for me; and I'm sure for others also, or we would be hearing one heck of a uproar.

Have you updated to 7.0v3?

  • Author

I am running 7.0v3 right now.

My question was not about the file you were importing from, but about the file you were importing to. I would like to see the field definition for the first field.

I tried it on a brand new field in addition to the old one (which is indexed). If you define a new field and do not modify it at all it still will not import the data.

Good Point Fenton,

I'm sure there would have been an UPROAR on this one if there had been a Bug. And, uproar is probably a mild word for it.

Maybe it's something a simple as or off the wall:

Are you doing this by script or manually?

If you are using a script, is this an old script that could be using an old import order?

Are you watching or seeing the import take place?

Have you verified that the field has been selected to receive data?

Field Definition = :)?

I believe there is something wrong with your file. Was it a conversion from FMP6? If so did you check the FMP6 file before converting?

  • Author

To answer your questions,

I am trying both a script and doing it manually (The script is just one line that calls an import)

The import happens almost instantly, with all of the fields filled but the order number

I can get other values on the import map to show up in the order number variable so it can receive data

The field definition is default on everything except it is set to index, which I turned off at one point and the same thing happened.

Post a copy of your file.

It was a conversion from FMP6, these files have been used for years now and I am not sure what version they were made in, so you could be right about the file. I did a recover on it and the same thing happens, I don't even think it fixed anything.

I will have to ask my boss if I can post a copy, I don't think it will be much of a problem if I save a clone and get rid of some unrelated things.

After trying some more imports, it seams that it is always the first piece of data in the tabbed file that gets left out. It doesn't matter what field I import into either.

What should I do about this, it seams there is some problem with line breaks on my one specific file, but not in others.

Upload your files??? Since every one here has tried, and failed, to duplicate your problem, the problem has to be in what you have, so the only thing left is to share your files.
