November 22, 200421 yr Hey there, I have a question about the installation / operation of a server program like Serv 7. Do you just install the server software on the network and then individual copies of FM 7 on each machine?? How does the whole server software work and communicate with other machines? very new to server operations... sorry
November 22, 200421 yr FMS runs on a machine (server) that has the database files and serves them to the network. Each machine (client) that wishes to use the database files must have FMP installed. The user will start up FMP, choose open, select host, and the files that FMS has open will be listed. Alternatively a simple opener file may be created for each client to simplify the opening of the database. All data is stored on the server machine. If a client machine crashes, no harm is likely to occur to the databases. Additionally, FMS simplifies the backing up of your databases.
November 29, 200421 yr Author Thanks Doug, I am a transfer from Microsoft Access so I am used to just sharing, without a server. I am in the process of changing over to FM7 and I have both Server and a bunch of copies of 7. So what do I have to really "do" to make it work through Server. If I am reading your post right, I just have to choose share through FM7 and not really do anything on the Server side itself? Thanks
November 30, 200421 yr Doug, I have a cabinet shop and I'm working on a solution that allows me to pass information forward and back from the shop to the office. At present this is networked between a G3 & G4 with one machine running Dev7 & one FM7. A weak spot in this approach is that I cannot stick PDF files in a container field on one machine and open them up on the other. I have been thinking I would like to add a computer at my home so I don't have to come to work as often (or as early). Could I install Server 7 on a third machine at the shop and be able to access it from my home computer? Would accessing the server from a remote location have any affect on the functionality of my solution? Thanks, Jarvis
