Back to Previous Layout

Is there a way of creating a script that will take the user back to the previous layout in browse mode? I have seen it done in MetamagicData, but their define fields and scripts were locked, so I could not see how it was done. With their solution you could not only go back to the precious layout, but also those that preceded that one.
