surfincajun Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Hello all, I am designing an invoicing system and would like all of the data to stay within one database. First the order is taken. The it is sent to a print file. Next it is sent to an order history file and customer history file. I would like to be able to export the records from the invoices directly into a print table. Then from a print table to a order and customer history tables. Is there any way to accomplish this in Filemaker 7? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Josh
ElDiablo Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Hello... It's possible, you just need to think the other way... If you can't export the data to your file, you can import it ! When you import data from a opened FileMaker file, FileMaker imports only selected records. As it's well the case here, the effect is the same than an export. Regards, ElDiablo
surfincajun Posted May 2, 2005 Author Posted May 2, 2005 Can anyone help me achieve my desired result. I have given up importing and exporting within the same file. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
xochi Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 It's fairly easy to import/export within the same file in FM7. Can you tell us exactly what you are doing? Maybe we can see where the mistake is...
surfincajun Posted May 25, 2005 Author Posted May 25, 2005 I am trying to export records from one table inside my database and import them into another table without using an external file. Is this possible in Filemaker 7?
-Queue- Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Isolate the records you want to 'export' and import them into your other table. No exporting is necessary.
Newbies JIMBO Posted May 29, 2005 Newbies Posted May 29, 2005 I want to archive paid invoices. Is importing from Active file to Archive file the way to go? Can it be scripted ? I tried but the import dialogue said that I cannot import a file to itself.
Søren Dyhr Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 I tried but the import dialogue said that I cannot import a file to itself. Give it another whirl ...it's posible!! But -But! There is some unhealthy considerations going on here, why store redundant data??? The distinction of whether an itemline in an invoice is sold or not, doesn't justify making neither copying nor exporting the value inside the same file!!! We're not talking of backups here, but merely data that changes status ...and this should be done on fieldlevel via a calcfield, like Comment does it here: http://www.fmforums.com/threads/download.php?Number=161104 ...or like i demonstrate in this thread, because the reasoning is the same: http://www.fmforums.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=159052 ...and the thread kind of contiunes here: http://www.fmforums.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=159269 Please note what the end of last the thread turning import/exports between tables into a convenient measure, when you have to handle set/kit's of what also exists as single itemID's. So all in all does import between tables certainly have it's place ...it's just in your case it is" wrong"! --sd
Newbies JIMBO Posted May 29, 2005 Newbies Posted May 29, 2005 Thanks Soren for your reply. I'll have a sit and a think. James
