Using Filemaker 4.1 v1: I have 6 database files being shared on PCs (same version on all) using Windows 98 SE. ONLY one of those 6 shared databases exhibits the following problem and only a new laptop using Windows XP Pro: in every field where the text would normally end, it extends somewhat beyond the border of the field before wrapping to the next line i.e. the cursor appears to be located to the left of where it affects the text, each space (right arrow) width is slightly smaller than each displayed letter or number of text. For about every 6 spaces the cursor moves it only moves past 5 letters in the field. This makes is very difficult to edit the fields. In fact, the "over run" letters stay on the display monitor after going into any number of new "finds"! This problem does not happen with any other user who accesses this database from their machines nor does it happen with any of the other 5 databases when used on the laptop. I only experiences this problem with this one particular shared database. This & all databases on the other machines appear without error. Advice is appreciated.

It sounds like FMP 4.1v1 is not compatible with WinXP. At the very least you should try installing the 4.1v3 patch. It's available on the FMI web site.

If it's only this one database and not others, then the file may be corrupted. Get a known-good older copy of the file, save a clone of it; recover the corrupted file then import the records into the clone. Lastly, update the next serial number value in Define Fields for all auto-enter serial numbers.

Howdy, J! Maybe try duplicating the layout and then switching the fonts in layout mode, too. Maybe the laptop has a slightly different font using the same fontID or name or something or is substituting for a font it doesn't have but trying to maintain the spacing/breaking. Maybe make a new db on the laptop, too.
