janet K Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I am hosting about 45 filemaker databases on a filemaker server version 5. Ever since I set up the new server people are getting disconnected. The error they are getting is as follows: Communication with the host has been interrupted and could not be re-established (-20) Any idea what could be causing this error? I have it set up so that it doesnt disconnect them if they are idle. It is now doing it more often even when people are in the middle of entering a record. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Janet
stanley Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Janet: This isn't necessarily a FileMaker Server issue. It could be an OS-level issue. Make sure that your server is not going into any kind of sleep mode, make sure it has a manually-entered IP address. If possible, do all the networking diagnostics you can do, to ensure that your network connections are reliable. This kind of disconnect can wreak havoc on your data, and can even result in corrupt databases, so you want to nip this thing in the bud. If you still have the old server lying around, launch FMS and copy down all of the server's settings, then copy down all the settings for networking, etc., and compare that stuff to the settings on your new server - you may find a clue to what's going on. -Stanley
janet K Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 Thanks Stanley, I will double check these things. Not everyone is loosing their connection at the same time. One person gets the error and everyone else is still in. Some people are in for 4 or 5 hours and fine and others get booted out 4 times a day, but not the same people. It wasnt happening on the client side until we got a new XP machine to put the server on so I am feeling like it is more and more like it is something on that machine that I am missing. Thanks Janet
DykstrL Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Have you checked the error log to see if any error codes or reasons are being logged as to why the disconnects are happening? It also sounds like it could be a network issue. Could be a router or hub is going out.
Wim Decorte Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Could just be flaky hardware on the XP box. Using XP as a server indicated a certain "cheapness" so I'm guessing the hardware is not top-notch, certainly not server material.
magicman Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 I am having this same issue. Different users get the "Communication with Host Was Interrupted" error. This problem happens intermittantly and a restart of the server clears things up (for a while) I would love to hears suggestions on what can be done to fix the problem. I have Server 5.5 on Windows 2000 Professional.
Ron F Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 This could possibly be some kind of network interuption such as a faulty switch (router) or bad network interface card. Just a thought.
