Viddar Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 I'm just started working with FM two days ago... I started with a template and changed it up for my needs. After looking and looking thru the help menus, I finally figured out how to work with scripts. Or so I thought... Below is a link to my file. Can someone please take a look at it and tell me what I'm doing wrong? My problem is this: I copied the sort script that the "Last Name" field is using, in the List layout view, and used it for the "Department" field. I made the nessessary changes to the script but it's still not working. Can someone tell me what I need to change. I must be missing something but I'll be darned if I can find it.Please be detailed in your solution for me as I really like this program and would love to continue using it... Thanx Here is the file
LaRetta Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Hi Viddar, With versions prior to 7, a sort (print, import, export, etc.) must be manually performed and then stored within the script. Try this: Manually perform a sort on Department Name ascending. Then open Script Maker, select your Department Ascending script and Edit. Select the Sort[] script-step, Say OK. Another dialog will appear. Here you must select REPLACE. Then say OK. Now that particular sort will be stored within your script. Repeat (manually sort first) on your Department Name Descending. This process has caused problems and confusion for many and has been changed in vs. 7; where sorts (imports, etc) are created and stored within the scripts themselves. LaRetta
Viddar Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 Thanx for the reply. I'm not sure what you mean by "manual sort" nor how to do it... You see, the actual file I'm needing to use this on already has over 400 enteries... Can you please explain how to do a manual sort, then I can follow the steps once scriptmaker is open...
LaRetta Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 It doesn't matter how many records you have in the file. This'll be very easy for you: From the FileMaker Menu, select Records > Sort Double-click your Department field to insert it from the left-side to the right-side. It will display ascending order (the tiny graph next to the field name). Third button down - click Sort and then Done. Then go into your script as I've outlined above. After you've REPLACED your Department Ascending script sort and are ready to do the descending, open Records > Sort again. Your Department field will still be there in the right-hand pane. Click it once to select it then look bottom left and click the descending radio. See how the tiny graph reverses itself? Click Sort then Done. Go back into your Department Descending script, and when leaving again select REPLACE. LaRetta
Viddar Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 OK, I must be INCREDIBLY stupid because this doesn't work for me. Is manual sort, is FM supposed to show the sort in the browse view or not? Mine's not... I understand what your saying now and am following your instructions to a "T" but it's a no-go here.
LaRetta Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 What part of my directions are a 'no go.' "It doesn't work for me" tells me nada. Yes, you should be in Browse Mode. Step through it: 1) Can you find on FileMaker top bar where it says Records? 2) Can you find (when clicking Records) the line that says Sort? 3) Can you find your Department field in the left-hand pane? Where is it breaking on you? I'm looking at your file as I am doing it. In the left-hand pane, your Department field is at the bottom and you may need to scroll to find it.
Viddar Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 EDIT: I got it to work! lol I did what you suggested like four times and everything worked finally... Dunno why, I must have hit the wrond key or something... Inresponse to your last post: It wouldn't sort when doing the maual sort. It finally did though. I'm not sure why it wouldn't do it the first time...
