looooooong sort

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I'll start here.

I've had this happen on 2 different occasions in FM7. A relatively simple calculation that is the 'to' end of a relation seems to cause a very slow, prolonged sort of just a few records when going to a layout that has a portal that uses the relation.

For the first occasion, it took as long as 30 seconds to 'sort' 9 records before displaying the layout. This second occasion takes several minutes to 'sort' about 400 records. You can count down the indicator - if you've got the patience - or go to the FM Forum to submit a topic like I'm doing now while it does the sort.

Anybody else experience this? Is there something I'm doing (or not doing) that might cause this? I'm using the 'sort' option on the portal. I do this elsewhere and do not get this result. I don't think my users will have the patience to wait each time they go to this frequently used layout.

TIA

How many related fields are in the portal sort? Are any of them unstored calculations? How many related records, on average, are in the portal?

None are unstored calculations. There are ~400 records in the portal.

When I do the sort as part of the relation definition, things are cool, but when I do the sort in the portal definition is when the slow sort occurs.

This is what we debated with LaRetta some days ago, what happens is when ever you turn to a layout with a portal on it that contains a scroll bar is the entire index called, and if sorting is required it's the process that follows.

Read this .pdf:

http://www.aptworks.com/downloads/presentations/PacketWatchingPres_v2.PDF

LaRetta have been seeking to organize her data around these facts, be schemes excluding the scrollbar ...this is done via a variation over - well read the leads Helpfull Harry gives in this url:

http://www.issociate.de/board/index.php?t=msg&goto=8974&rid=0#msg_8974

...although its the popping back they seek solutions for. But the issue here is that in LaRettas thread are all templates shown in 7.0 ...while Harry's leads are made for previous versions.

BTW is LaRettas thread this:

http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/167929/hl/scroll/tp/1/

I imagine problem is either a constant related portal as Lee talkes about or carthesian product ditto ...in order to prevent users to switch to a new layout to pluck a customers name or such. Please note that other techniques exists to organize your data. If you're on 7.0 might one of these templates just fit the bill.
