moving tables from one file to another

Is there a way to copy/remove a table (and all its fields) from one file to another existing file?

Of course it is possible to duplicate one file and delete all the tables one does not want, but this does not work if you have two files and you want to move one table from one to the other.

Unfortunately this is not possible, unless you use a third party tool like FMRobot.

Peter

You can do it the old fashion way, Copy/Paste.

How? We've tried with no luck! Maybe it works on a Mac, but unfortunately we only have PC's in the office ;)

You should update your profile to reflect the OS, Platform, and version of FileMaker.

And you are trying this in Layout mode for both files (layouts).

Lee, maybe I misunderstand you but surely you cannot copy tables between files using copy/paste ? Layouts, OK, but I haven't been able to bring a complete table with fields into another file.

Peter

It was a little ambiguous the way I said it.

You're right, it will not move the fields from one File to another, only their attributes. However, if you create the Fields in the second file prior to the copy/paste (exact same names are required), then the fields will appear just as they were in the first file .

If the fields don't exist, then their attributes appear as blank fields, although the Field Names appear as they did in the first file. You can manually select the fields and change a blank field by selecting a Field that does exist.

Thanks for clearing that up. But I think the original question was whether it is possible to import an entire table - with fields and possibly records - from one file into another. And that, unfortunately, is not the case.

It *should* be possible IMHO, as well as table duplication within the same file, but it seems we will have to wait until Version 8 (or longer) to get that functionality.

Regards,

Peter

Don't feel too bad, I've been waiting since version 1.

I guess that's why we get paid to do this, if It it was easy, they wouldn't need us.
