create scratchpad/free text/notepad

Featured Replies

Good aftenoon all....

Thanks to plenty of help/advice from fellow forum users, i've started to create a membership database.

What i'm trying to do now is to create a scratchpad/notepad, where database users can enter text to make notes on a members data.

e.g: member broke leg. 21/07/05 etc.

The ability to add numerous notes per member is required, as is the ability to select a heading for the note from a drop down list.

This drop down list contains headings that in our organistation are known as 'Event Type Codes'.

Elsewhere in the database is the ability to add to this list of Event Type Codes, so the list for the scratchpads will need to be automatically updated to suit additions/deletions.

Any ideas or advice on how to create such a scratchpad...?

I have attached the database has it stands now (this includes my list of Event Type Codes).

Many thanks for your help.

Kindest Regards,

Shane.

Hello,

I attached your file back.

It supposed to be a setup that you click the name, creates a new record, or you could set it up to fin that person, and then enter data.

The name is repeating because in the membership table it is the only name there.

I am not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for for but I thought I would give it a try

O' yeah I forgot to say. The notepad part I think should be a separte table from Events. I did not have time to separate them. I think it would would make it a lot smoother

Hi,

I've had a look a the file, thanks.

I agree that it should be seperate, though obviously i appreciate time restrants etc.

I've added another member (using Start Menu ---> Add Member), but the name does not appear anywhere on the scratchpad layout - is this working..? If not, how do i go about doing this..?

Any more help that you could provide would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Shane.

I'm working on it.. I'll get it to you very soon.

Ok I spent a little more time,

Go to the new layout "Scratch Pad New"

You will see that it works with one record.

The reason why you did not see the new member was that I forgot to put the scroll bar on the portal and the membor was at the bottom.

Overall I like this solution better. Much smoother.

I had to create a couple of new tables. One for Scratch pad data, and one for Scratch Pad Globals.

What is nice about this, is that it allows for a better expansion, ie more notes more events.

Let me know what you think

Hi,

Just had a look. It's looking good - many thanks.

I've attached the database with my version of the scratchpad - Remember, i'm a newbie at this ;)-)

Is there any way that you could combine your technical ability with the type of layout for the scratchpad section on the attached file...? (If it can be done, of course).

If you take a look, you'll see what i mean (linking of the scratchpad layout to the rest of the database is not working/incomplete, so things may not work as they're meant to. If you could help out on that i'd be grateful...)

Many thanks,

Shane.

wrong file attached.

Quick Question.

Are you trying to keep a record of the different events a member has, or the different members that have events?

It seems you would want to know by member what events have happened to them. Right now you have 77 records that just list the different types of events. You may want to re-work this so that the events are in a separte table. You do not even have to link them, they can just be there for a value list entry. That way you would have 1 record for each note, and not the 77 records that are wasted. Then you could draw the notes in to the membership database.

Sorry if I'm unclear about this. Have a nasty head cold brewing.

Hi,

Yep - i'm trying to keep a record of the events that a member has.

I see the point about the records being wasted - i think that is more to do with me not able to design the database... rather than anything else. ;-)

Many thanks,

Shane.

So with that question answered.

You are going to want the Notes and events tied to the membership file.

My advice is to separate it. Have differnt tables for the different types of information. Have a table for a list of Events, have a table that holds all the notes.

How do you plan on picking the member you would like to write notes about? I see you have a "Scratch Pad" button. You may want to stick a layout in there before you get to the Scratch Pad part, that would allow you to pick your member. You could have a portal that list all your member, then make a button that goes to the Scratch pad, makes a new record, and brings the member number. I've had problems using the set field script step for this type of stuff, I would use the copy/paste.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

A fellow forum member kindly set up the portal for me - has i could never get my head around it.

Is there any way you could help me sort this one out..?

This is the last part i've got to do before Monday night.

I'm off work for a month then - going the USA for 26 days (Chicago, Seattle, San Fran, Yosemite, LA, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and back to Chicago) - can't wait... :woohoo:

Kindest Regards,

Shane.
