October 10, 200520 yr Thoughth this would easy but I can't seem to get it to work... I want to store the data a 0s 1s and display as No or Yes. Works great for data in place but I would like a Radio button that allows the user to use Yes No but place the number. I thought about using the "Show values from second Field" but then I'd need a table for that.... or is the solution staring at me ferociously? Any ideas? Thanks!
October 11, 200520 yr Logically this can't be done, but I'm happy to be proved wrong. If the values stored are 0 and 1 and the radio buttons display Yes and No then no matter what the value the field will have no button checked. You can format an edit box to show Yes and No when the field values are boolean 1 and 0 but that doesn't work with a radio button set. There is of course a work round define a radio button set with 0 and 1 and then lay text labels with No and Yes hiding the 0 and 1.
October 11, 200520 yr As Jim mentions, create a Custom value list called Select 1. Put only a 1 in it. Create another called Select 0. Put a 0 in it. Attach one VL to the field (Select 1). Reformat size to 18 px x 18 px or so (small enough that the 1 doesn't show). Insert text "Yes" next to the radio. Repeat with the other, attaching Select 0 to the same field. Insert text 'No". They toggle just fine or work ungrouped and placed anywhere. I always keep a Select 1 and Select 0 Custom Value List. I attach it to many checkboxes or radios, calling them whatever I wish and placing them apart (no longer grouped).
October 12, 200520 yr Hi LaRetta, I'm missing something...how does one easily deselect a radio button field with just one value in it? Hitting Delete key when in the field works but I'm not sure how intuitive that would be for the typical end user. I do something similar with a "Yes/No" value list in solutions and it toggles just fine. I don't see how yours could toggle without using auto-enter calcs.
October 12, 200520 yr Shift-Click does the job. Not intuitive I grant you although there is some analogy with Tab and Shift-Tab. Interestingly Shift-click also allows you to select more than one button in a Radio button set!!!!
October 12, 200520 yr You deselect the radio by clicking the 0 radio. Try what I suggested in the thread. It works. It works for checkbox and all value lists. I'm saying they don't have to be connected - only attached to the same field. I didn't say you need only ONE radio. Of course you need two. I disconnect them and attach different VL (one with 1 and one with 0) to them all the time. I dislike FM's radio positioning. :wink2:
October 12, 200520 yr Author I was hoping not to need to add a table, but I think the simplest solution in FM 8 is to create a second table, let's call it the "YesNo" table where the PK field is filled with the primary keys 0 and 1 and the Descriptor field are No and Yes. Return to the original layout of the db, double click on the field that you want to be a radio button, set it to be Radio buttons and set up a value list via "use values from a field" then specify the YesNo table. Use the values from the PK field, then select "also display values from second field" but ensure you switch "Show values from second field" to on. I hope my explanation is clear... Cheers and thanks for the help and ideas! Edited October 12, 200520 yr by Guest spelling
October 12, 200520 yr I didn't say you need only ONE radio. Of course you need two. I disconnect them and attach different VL (one with 1 and one with 0) to them all the time. That went right by me when I read it initially. Makes perfect sense now! I dislike FM's radio button positioning, also.
