Please help! I've recently upgraded to FMP 7 and am having difficulty with look-ups. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've converted my old databases that had look-ups that worked successfully before conversion. In the converted files the look-up info only comes in after you close the file and reopen it.

Okay...so I took a step back and tried to trouble shoot what I was doing wrong.....I tried to set up new simple related databases with look-ups and the look-up info appears inconsistently. Sometimes I can enter the key info and the related info will come in and sometimes I enter the key info and no info comes in. Sometimes this happens in the same record where I enter the info unsuccessfully and keep trying by deleting and reentering and then magically it appears after several attempts. The simple database consisted of an ID number as the key info and First Name and Last Name as Look-Up fields to the related file. What am I doing wrong? I feel like a beginner again. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you committing the record (clicking out of the fields or pressing Enter, assuming the Field Behavior is not set to go to the next field when Enter is pressed) after entering the key field?

If that is not the problem, can you Stuff and attach your file?

Thank you so much for the reply. I have tabbed out of the field and it still doesn't work. I have attached a sample file that is reacting the same way. I have also reposted my problem with the same attached sample files.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I have deleted your duplicate topic. Please do not double-post as it makes it more difficult to follow threads.

The sample worked fine for me. Are you using 7.0 v3?

Yes, I'm using 7.0 v3.

Thanks for deleting my duplicate topic. I didn't think I could add an attachment to my original post after I had posted it. I know differently now.

Perhaps it is a Mac issue. If so, someone else will have to offer some advice.

The files worked fine on your PC? I was going to go try a PC next. However, the person using the files are on a Mac.

Works fine on Mac 10.3.9, FileMaker Developer 7 and FileMaker Pro Advanced (8). It's a little odd to be looking up from the "related" to the "master"; but as a test it works. I would be freaking out if it didn't, as it's just a straight lookup.

I too am using Mac 10.3.9. I tried FileMaker Pro 7 and 8. I can't figure out what is going wrong.

Let me explain exactly what I'm doing. I go to the "relateto master" file and enter info. I then went to the Master file and entered an ID number hoping to pull in info from the related file. The info doesn't come in even when I tab through all the fields. Is that how you tried it?

Yes, it's working fine. Your relationship is a little weird. You have "Allow creation of related records" on in both directions, which I can't see why you'd want that. But the lookup still works.

Did you commit the new record (i.e., not just tab through the fields, but click out of them or press Enter) in the related file before entering its ID in the master one?

That's it! I never had to click outside of the fields or press Enter to commit the new record when I entered data in FMP 5 or 6. I simply tabbed through the fields. Thanks for your Advice and Patience.

Thanks for your advice and trying the sample file. I know I shouldn't have had "Allow creation of related records" in both directions. I was just trying anything and everything. I can stop pulling out my hair now. I guess "Committing data" in FMP7 is more than just tabbing through fields like I was use to in FMP 5&6. Thanks for your time.
