Newbies GinTx Posted December 2, 2005 Newbies Posted December 2, 2005 I need to find a resource that will teach me to write scripts. I can have someone here help me write a script, but it's really not doing much good because I don't know what each of those little steps do, so I can't really point the function to the correct field or record. Can you guys tell me if there is a resource out there that will teach me to write scripts and explain what all the functions and script steps do in laymans terms?
Ted S Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Hi there GinTx, It seems like you are in a typical spot for a beginner right now. I would suggest taking a class on FM development. They are pretty hard to find unless you are in a big city. Another option may be a training video. I personally prefer videos over a books when learning the basics. I had a set of videos from MacAcademy but that was 7 or 8 years ago. There may be a better source now. Maybe someone else will chime in with their recommendations. As far as exactly what each of the individual script steps and functions go, I doubt that any training video or class will cover them all. It would be a bit like an introductory english class covering all of the words contained in the dictionary. Once you get comfortable with the general idea behind scripting and FileMaker itself you will probably find the FM Help system to be a great tool but for beginners the help system can be very frustrating.
Lee Smith Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 (edited) Good advice Ted. I would also recommend joining a local user group, subscribing to a couple of On line Training sites such as http://www.filemakermagazine.com/ or http://www.isoproductions.com/ or http://www.databasepros.com/vtc.html and the resource part http://www.databasepros.com/FMPro or http://dwdataconcepts.com/ and don't for get www.nightwing.com.au by CobaltSky a.k.a. Ray J. Cologon Check with your community college (if you have one), and see if they offer a course in Filemaker. There is an Older book on Scripts called Scriptology Demystified. It was written in version 4, and had a CD of Scripts. Check out ISO Production site. It sometimes comes available on Ebay, however most (all) of the sample scripts are are available at www. fmfiles.com in the Script area http://www.fmfiles.com/tnt8.html BTW, even though these files are v4, you can still learn from them. SteveB Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 I just saw a review by FMPug user about FMP 7 Reference materials by John Mark Osborne that may be an update of sorts of Scriptology. Go here Link Steve
